You Said: No to Harem Pants

omiru-poll-result-harem-pants_122009

foldover-harem-pant_122009We asked: Would you wear Harem Pants?

You said:  An overwhelming No to Harem Pants, with a 90% to 10% vote.

Style tip? Harem Pants - you either love them, or you hate them.  Hardly do we see a fashion trend that’s so polarizing, perhaps because it’s almost anti-fashion.  You don’t wear harem pants for figure flattery, or because they’re pretty.  You wear them to make a fashion statement.  If you dare to make that style statement, we recommend pairing your voluminous harem pants with something more streamlined (or at least drapey, to reduce the volume) up top.

Next question: Polka Dots provide visual texture in the form of a pretty pattern.  But they can be too cute, especially when done too large or too small.  But what do you think?  Tell us, would you wear polka dots?  Cast your vote on the sidebar!

Winter 2009 Lookbook: Yes, You Can Wear Sequins During the Day

winter-2009-sequins-daytime_121609Pictured: Merino Rose Corsage Cardigan | $89.50 at J Crew, Sequined Starland Tank | $138 at J Crew, Flocked Dot Shirt | $39.50 at American Eagle, Straight Jean | $29.50 at American Eagle, Mischa Barton Logo Clutch Bag | $66.29 at ASOS, Tulip Faux Suede Boots | $22.50 at Forever 21.

Can you wear sequins during the day?  Yes, you can!  Sequins are a great way to dress up casual clothes - and they work surprisingly well with daywear.  We paired a sequinned top with everyday basics, and topped it off with a brightly colored cardigan for an extra kick.  Here’s how to wear sequins during the day:

1. Start with the most basic of foundations: the plain white button down shirt and the straight leg, dark rinse jeans.
2. Upon that classic foundation, slip on a sequinned tank top for a mix that’s thoroughly modern.
3. For an extra kick, add a brightly colored sweater to the mix.  The sequinned tank hugs the white button-down, and it peeks out from under the statement sweater.
4. Finish off the look with an embellished clutch bag (note how the shine on the bag echoes the glimmer of the sequins) and a pair of tall boots (yes, tuck your jeans in).

How would you wear sequins during the day?

Winter 2009 Lookbook: The Art of Embellishment

Pictured: Frill Stripe Tunic Dress | $80 at Topshop, Alexander Wang Moto Jacket with Detachable Sleeves | $825 at La Garconne, Ankle Leggings | $24 at Topshop, Black Leather Art Deco Beaded Sequin Clutch | $76.49 at ASOS, Embellished Velvet Flats | $19.80 at Forever 21.

How do you dress up plain black and white?  It’s simple really - just add embellishment and texture!  You’ll be amazed at how glamourous basics can look with a little bit of shine.  Here’s how to get the black and white, yet strikingly embellished look:

1. Start with black and white basics: a body conscious black and white striped sweaterdress and simple black ankle leggings.
2. Add a touch of edge with a well cut motorcycle jacket, also in black.
3. Spice up the look with a pair of embellished velvet flats (for both embellishment AND texture) and a striking silver beaded sequinned clutch.  With these statement accessories, you can take a daytime look well into evening.

Do as Londoners Do: Sport the Perfect Winter Coat

Greetings from London!  What’s striking about London (besides the freezing cold - it’s a far cry from sunny California out here) is the fantastic outerwear.  Both men and women sport coats that are as fashion-forward as they are functional.

For men, the perfect layering coat works as well with trouser pants (for work) as it does with jeans (for weekends).  We’ve seen a number of great jackets and coats that fit the bill.  Here’s five of our favorite mens coats from London destination Topshop:

You Said: Yes to Winter White

omiru-poll-result-white_121309

silk-frances-cami_121309We asked: Would you wear Winter White?

You said:  Yes to Winter White, with a 88% to 12% vote.

Style tip? No matter what the season, white is the color of purity, of freshness, of newness.  And it’s completely invigorating during the winter, a season traditionally filled with dark, heavy overcoats.  Give a nod to the freshly fallen snow and echo its color in your wardrobe.  For those of us prone to spills and smudges, try winter white in an easy-to-clean fabric, like a basic cotton.  Or get the look of winter white via accessories - like a white handbag or scarf.  For those of you who want to immerse yourselves in winter white, try a monochromatic white look from head to toe.  Simply mix textures like cable knit, jersey, denim, and corduroy - and combine a pleasing mix of creams and more snow whites.  Where to start?  This gorgeous cami, featuring a ruffle front bib.

Next question: Our how to wear harem pants feature created quite the stir - while it’s certainly a fashion forward look, there are no shortage of detractors.  But what do you think?  Tell us, would you wear harem pants?  Cast your vote on the sidebar!

What to Wear to Give a Presentation

Q: I am a college student that is a business major. As finals week slowly approach, I have presentations to present. What should I wear to the presentation? My dilemma is that I don’t want to look too overdressed or underdressed. Would a simple black dress and a boyfriend fit blazer with black flats be okay to wear?

wool-gabardine-one-button-jacket_121009
Pictured: Wool Gabardine One Button Jacket | $235 at J Crew.

A: Whether it’s a presentation during finals or a boardroom presentation in the workplace, the key to dressing well is to wear something that you feel confident in.  We all have outfits (and shoes) that make us feel good - and ready to take on whatever the day throws at us.  For a presentation where it’s important to make a good impression, tip the scales in your favor by wearing a tried and true favorite.  Or if you’re buying something new for the presentation, make sure to try on the whole outfit to get the right fit - and feel - before the day of the event.  That way, the day of the presentation, you can focus on what really matters: your message.

For a college presentation, you’ll want to keep your look professional, but still youthful.  If you wear a suit, keep it fitted and feel free to take some liberties with your shirt - you don’t have to wear a plain white or striped button-down.  Try different fabrics (like the chambray shirt, pictured), colors, or silhouettes.  You can also choose to go the dress route and wear a simple dress, as you suggested, with a professional looking jacket.  You may want to mix up the colors - a heathered grey dress with a navy blazer, for instance, would be both professional and a little more visually interesting.

For a workplace presentation, a good rule of thumb is to dress a level or two above your position.  That way, you’ll be sure to look polished, but you won’t be overly dressy.

If you’re being filmed, here’s a couple of extra style notes:

(1) Bright, vibrant colors work best for TV; they look good to the eye - and the camera.
(2) Try not to wear white clothes - it’ll wash out the lighting.
(3) Same goes for pure black or navy clothes.  While they look good to your eye, they tend to look like a solid patch of darkness to the camera’s eye.
(4) Fine patterns like herringbone and small checks can cause a wavy effect; avoid these patterns where possible.

The Look of…Coco Chanel

the-look-of-coco-chanel_120909

Pictured: Premium Hairy Bolero Jacket | $135 at Topshop, Double Button Placket Top | $32 at Topshop, Double Knit Skirt | $14.80 at Forever 21, Glitter Fedora | $10.80 at Forever 21, Mesh Pearl Strands | $10.80 at Forever 21, Kensington Oxford Pump | $24.99 at Payless.

We’ve always been enamored of the charmingly confident style of Coco Chanel.  And channeling her signature blend of menswear and womenswear is surprisingly easy now that the collarless bolero coat and pearls have planted themselves firmly on the trend radar.  (Audrey Tautou’s film Coco Before Chanel also didn’t hurt to repopularize Chanel’s style.)  To get a modern version of Coco Chanel’s look, mix simple shapes with different textures - and combine feminine silhouettes (e.g. pencil skirt) with masculine details (e.g. fedora hat).  Here’s how to get the look of Coco Chanel:

1.  Start with the simplest of foundations: a white blouse and a black pencil skirt.
2.  Layer on Chanel’s signature pieces: a pearl necklace (note the modernization of the traditional pearls) and a textured bolero jacket.
3.  Finish off the look with menswear inspired pieces with a feminine touch: a ribbon wrapped fedora hat and a pair of oxford pumps.

Five Cold Weather Coats to Keep You Warm this Winter

Whether you’re going to be out and about or keeping cozy inside this winter, it’s time to update your coat wardrobe.  To make your way through the cold weather, you’re going to want a variety of jackets and coats so that you can mix and match and layer for every occasion.  This year’s must-have coat is the rugged parka (a cousin of the also-ubiquitous puffer jacket), but we also recommend that every man have a nice topcoat in his wardrobe for dressier occasions.  Whether your style runs formal or stays casual, we have a cold weather coat for you:

How to Wear Black and White? With Texture and Embellishment!

black-white_120709

Pictured: Reformed Silk Ruffle Tank | $58 at Urban Outfitters, Elastic Belt Satin Skirt | $21.50 at Wet Seal, Wool Ruffle Duffle Coat | $187.60 at J Crew, Tulip Faux Suede Boots | $22.50 at Forever 21, ASOS Iridescent Feather Clutch | $42.49 at ASOS.

Black and white can be anything but plain.  Just keep things interesting with texture, pattern, and embellishments.  We’ve crafted a flirtily feminine look out of black and white pieces, perfect for date night.  But take apart the pieces and you can mix and match for work, weekend, and everything in between.  Here’s how to get the look of black and white:

1.  Start with a delicate black and white patterned cami.  The silk fabric drapes nicely, while the texture keeps the cami interesting.
2.  Slip on a silk satin skirt in a forgiving, slight a-line shape.  What makes this skirt particularly fetching is the belt detail - don’t you love it?
3. It’s cold outside, so grab your coat.  We love this coat for its delicate-yet-tailored ruffle detail.
4. Finish off the look with a pair of slouchy suede tall boots - and a statement clutch in iridescent feathers.
