Style tip? Green’s not just for Spring. You’ll be wearing this hue come Fall, in more muted shades. What to pair with green? Try grey (as seen at Tracy Reese, with a grey infinity scarf and tights, and at Monique Lhuillier, where grey tones down a look full of beading and shine). But don’t discount the beauty of brown. While we wouldn’t advocate wearing the VPL swimsuit outfit around town, we love how the warm brown booties and belt pair with the forest green cardigan.

Style tip? We’ve got another fashion trend that you don’t have to wait to wear. Shorts are huge for Spring, and they’ll be just as relevant come Fall (just in thicker fabrics, of course). How to wear shorts in cooler temperatures? Pair them with boots, tights, or high socks to keep your legs covered. If you have great legs, you can manage the short shorts (as seen at Tracy Reese and Charlotte Ronson), but an easier silhouette to wear is the knee-length short. Look for cuffed knee-length shorts for a fresh Fall/Winter look.

Style tip? In a season of economic uncertainty, we’re turning back to basics, and the color palette of the season is reflecting our economic reality. Neutrals are the big color story (or anti-color story, as it were) of the season. Stock up on khaki, sand, and grey colors - which are just as appropriate for Spring 2010 as they are for Fall. How to make these neutrals interesting? Increase the visual appeal of neutrals with some careful layering. After all, the beauty of neutrals are that they all go together.

The next couple of weeks will keep the Omiru team hopping. Today marked the start of New York Fashion Week, the very last one that will be held in the hallowed tents at Bryant Park. As we have for the last few seasons, we’ll be digesting the shows and editing them down to a succinct set of trends that you need to know about for Fall 2010. And next week, coinciding with Fashion Week, we also have MAGIC, the premier trade event for the fashion industry, from which we’ll be scouting trends and up and coming designers for you.
On a more reflective note, today will be remembered as a dark day for the fashion world, as one of the industry’s most legendary designers, Alexander McQueen, killed himself at his Mayfair flat. McQueen’s bad boy antics and mischevious sense of humor humanized the uniquely eccentric sense of style that placed him at the forefront of the fashion world. He was haunted by his demons, most recently, the death of his beloved mother, but with his demons came great creative genius. We’re thankful for the life that Alexander McQueen breathed into the fashion industry - and can only hope that he has finally found peace.

Style tip? Even though the split was pretty close to 50-50 on this vote, we still encourage you to go out and at least try on a pair of military style boots, if you don’t buy them outright. Military boots are the natural choice for this Winter’s rock chic style, and they’re a wonderful counterpoint to Spring’s mix of femininity and utility. You can wear these versatile military boots with skinny jeans and leggings now, and in a few months, pair them with a feminine frock or a khaki cargo pant.

When it’s chilly out, it’s natural to reach for your warm, cozy puffer jacket. Only thing is, the puffer jacket, as its name suggests, often makes you look puffy. The voluminous coat may not be a natural in the figure flattery department, but it doesn’t have to make you look big, as the stylish women in Paris and London have deftly demonstrated. Here’s six tips for staying slim in a puffer jacket:
(1) Belt your Puffer Jacket.
One of the reasons why puffer jackets can be so unflattering is that they give you no waist definition. Bring back your curves under the puffer by creating that waist definition with a belt. Either choose a puffer with a self belt, or DIY with your own belt in a similar color. I personally love the look of a black elastic belt with a simple front closure (mine’s from Uniqlo, but you can get these at all of the fast fashion retailers) with a sleek black puffer, as pictured.
(2) Wear a Fitted Puffer Jacket.
If you decide to go beltless, you can still get a trim look with a fitted puffer. My Zara puffer, for instance, cinches on the sides so you can get a streamlined look sans belt.
(3) Choose a Puffer Jacket that’s Short and Slim.
If you wear a puffer jacket that’s short (i.e. above hip-length), you don’t have to worry as much about defining your waistline. Just choose a jacket with a somewhat slim silhouette, and you’ll be good to go.
(4) Wear your Puffer Jacket with a Slim Silhouette.
What to wear with a puffer jacket? The key is slim fitting garments to create a streamlined look. Leggings, skinny jeans, pencil skirts - these are all good choices for pairing with your puffer.
(5) Wear Heels with Your Puffer Jacket.
A good rule of thumb for dressing yourself - the more volume you’re wearing, the taller you need to look to pull it off. So if you’re wearing a puffy jacket, wear shoes with heels. You don’t have to wear stiletto high heels, but a couple of extra inches of height will do your look good.
(6) Wear a Black Puffer Jacket.
The first rule in the fashion book is that black is slimming, which is probably why so many fashionistas tend to wear their puffer jackets noir. We’re all for advocating the breaking of fashion rules, if done deliberately and with care, but we don’t see a good reason to mess with this rule. For the longest and leanest look, you’re best served with basic black.

Style tip? There’s no question that Leopard Print attracts attention. But it seems that you’re pretty split about whether that attention is a good or bad thing. Certainly, Leopard Print isn’t for the faint of heart. But worn right, it can be quite fetching. If you’re feeling bold, try a leopard print jacket. Paired with a slim bottom (pencil skirt, leggings, skinny pants), it makes for a figure flattering silhouette. But if you’re looking to give the trend a try without going full force, try a leopard print scarf. It pairs beautifully with basic black (very Parisian chic), and the yellowy orange provides a lovely counterpart to the everpresent denim colors this season. But for something new while keeping it safe, try a colored leopard scarf. We love the deep blue on Topshop’s version of the leopard scarf, which juxtaposes a hint of leopard spots against the detail of a gorgeous chain print.
