Whether or not it’s freezing outside, a new layering trend has been spotted on the runways and models. Unlike the Marc Jacobs throw-on-everything-you-have-in-your-closet version seen at New York Fashion Week, this new type of clothing on clothing is strictly for jackets. Model Gemma Ward was seen sporting the look on the streets, while Sasha Pivovarova wore it on the runway (as seen at Style Tribe). Here are a few coats that will layer nicely (unless you live in a desert).
Pair #1: You can wear the floral print style under or over the khaki coat, but I would recommend the latter so that the beautiful details of the floral coat stand out.
Gold Brocade Blazer | $99.99 (sale) at Banana Republic
Pair #2: For a sportier look, the hoodie goes underneath the jean jacket.
Authentic Hoodie | $19.99 (sale) at Gap
Leather Jean Jacket | $198 at Gap
Pair #3: The bright hue peeking out from the herringbone short-sleeve jacket will be adorable.

As if the existing shorts-as-eveningwear weren’t cropped enough, now they’re being cuffed, a sort of throwback to your grandfather’s geeky golf pants. But hey, we’re not complaining! The following pairs can be worn day or night, with leggings, tights, or bare. As long as you don’t look like you’re trying to channel your gramps, this look can be very fashion forward and sexy.
Always Summer Shorts | $14.80 at Forever 21
Billy Blues Roll Cuff Shorts | $84 at Nordstrom
Diane Von Furstenberg Belted Shorts | $185 at Nordstrom
If you’d rather leave the Daisy Duke-esque cuffed shorts to Jessica Simpson, here’s a longer version:

It’s not Labor Day yet, so quick–hop on the white bag bandwagon before September is here. But just because you’ll be sporting a white purse doesn’t mean you have to also wear white from head to toe. Au contraire, this trend requires you to not wear your white hobo with a white blouse and white capris. Instead, opt for a wardrobe without white in it. If you must match one item to your hot new bag, get the new white skinny jeans. Now that’ll be a killer combination.

Colored tights are making a comeback, so go on, sport any color under the rainbow. If you
catch anyone staring at your legs, rest assured that it’s not because
they think you’re crazy, but because they’re blinded by the bright! That
said, do yourself a favor and keep your other colors neutral. You
don’t
want to be mistaken for a member of the local circus.

As we’ve mentioned before, voluminous sleeves are going to be Huge this fall, as seen on the runways of Peter Som and Oscar de la Renta. A look at StyleBytes indicates that the trend is going strong in Europe as well–look at the sleeves on that plaid Balenciaga. These sleeves are a great way to experiment with volume. We’ve found that the key to keeping this look updated is to make sure the volume is not near the upper arm and shoulders, which will indeed make you look ‘theatrical.’

We can’t believe these jackets have just now landed in the fashion forefront because there are so many great reasons to wear them. There’s something effortlessly chic about the swingy midsection and girly three-quarter sleeves. They’re also a simple way to experiment with volume, if you’re averse to, say, poufy tulip skirts. Our favorite way to wear this jacket? With a long, fitted top (to balance out the crop and the width), a long chain and your favorite going-out jeans.

Only a couple months ago, finding a decent pair of skinny jeans was next to impossible. Lucky for Kate Moss protégés all over, clothing companies are finally making the Brit rockstar look accessible to us regular folks. If you have svelte legs à la Sienna Miller, the skinny jean will further accentuate your thin frame. If your legs are short, however, you may want to stay away from the following pairs as they tend to stick to the skin.
Liv Super Slim | $143 at Diesel

Joe’s Jeans Cigarette Leg Stretch Jeans | $158 at Nordstrom

To the dismay of Mary-Kate Olsen, Nicole Ritchie, and hordes of bug-eyed wannabees, the Jackie-O-style sunglasses are being downsized to a much smaller dimension this Spring and Summer. Tiny & Square is the new look so start tucking away the oversized shades before you look expired. Speaking of ancient, don’t be surprised if this new look conjures up fond memories of the plastic rectangular 3-D lenses you once sported at Universal Studios in your childhood. Note: If you have a big face, Tiny & Square shades might make you look silly, so try before you buy.

Once again, the dictators of style have proved that what’s old is new. Based on some of the looks at this past fashion week in New York (not to mention the stylish ones I recently saw at Zara), trench coats seem to be the “in†thing. To go beyond the confines of the flattering cinched waists of these coats, safari-style jackets seem to be inching to the forefront as well.
Nonetheless, these pieces of outwear are suitable for the office or for a night on the town. For both men and women, trenches and safaris are definitely a good way to spruce up an outfit to make you look sophisticated, stylish and most of all, keep you comfortable in mild weather.
It looks like the frenzied check-patterned Burberry (the women’s violet is uber fancy) is the leader when it comes to chic outwear (no surprise), but it is a bit disappointing that there is a lack of belted safaris (not trenches) when it comes to the men’s side. Even so, the white Cole Haan is clean and tight, while the yellow trench is a modernized hip makeover of the yellow raincoat. I am sure as the word gets out, these jackets will invade the world like a “London Fog†– pun intended.
