Hip Hop Fashion as seen at the House of Mamasan Fashion Show
Hip-hop culture consists of four primary elements: MC’ing, turntablism, breakdancing and graffiti. Some might say that basketball is the unspoken fifth element, but in our humble opinion, fashion is more relevant in the fabric of hip-hop culture.
Ever since the days of the retro rap of Run DMC, there has been a phenomenal impact of hip-hop culture in the world of fashion. Think about it – the bling, the Adidas track suits, the fat laces, the hoop earrings – it’s all been a prominent force in urban street garb.
Now, the world of hip-hop takes up a reasonable chunk of the fashion industry. Brands like Roca Wear, Sean John, Baby Phat, Fetish and Akademiks play a big role in hip-hop while other brands like Triple 5 Soul and Juicy Couture are more of an authoritative undercurrent.
Sure, there are the more obvious aesthetics involved in this realm (i.e. uberbaggy jeans, Kangol hats, throwback jerseys), but there is a less blatant spectrum to this edgy world of hip-hop. And as cliché as it may sound, it’s a lot about the attitude when trying to pull off some of these hip-hop clothes. Otherwise, you’ll just look like a big poser.

This year, count on the v-neck top to take over some prime real estate in your closet– in the form of the extra deep v-neck.
Worried about being overtly suggestive? For an appropriately suggestive day look, we recommend layering with a tank underneath. Go ahead–take the plunge!
Ruched v-neck | $28 at Victoria’s Secret
La Rok Rope Empire Top | $128 at Girlshop
Hooded V-Neck Sweater | $19.50 at Old Navy
Drafting Board Sweater | $78 at Anthropologie

Spotted: a rich crimson red Burberry buckle shoe!
Sadly, the shoes were bought quite some time ago, according to the shoe’s owner. But if you’re looking to get your hardware-adorned shoe fix, you’re in the right place…

Only a couple months ago, finding a decent pair of skinny jeans was next to impossible. Lucky for Kate Moss protégés all over, clothing companies are finally making the Brit rockstar look accessible to us regular folks. If you have svelte legs à la Sienna Miller, the skinny jean will further accentuate your thin frame. If your legs are short, however, you may want to stay away from the following pairs as they tend to stick to the skin.
Liv Super Slim | $143 at Diesel
Good with flats but not heels.
Joe’s Jeans Cigarette Leg Stretch Jeans | $158 at Nordstrom
Good with flats and heels.
7 For All Mankind Roxy Stretch Jeans | $143 at Nordstrom
Good with flats.
Lux Stretch Slim Jean Vintage Wash | $64 at Urban Outfitters
Good with heels.
Sass & Bide Frayed Misfits Stove Pipe Jeans | $220 at Shopbop
Good with heels.

Once again, the dictators of style have proved that what’s old is new. Based on some of the looks at this past fashion week in New York (not to mention the stylish ones I recently saw at Zara), trench coats seem to be the “in†thing. To go beyond the confines of the flattering cinched waists of these coats, safari-style jackets seem to be inching to the forefront as well.
Nonetheless, these pieces of outwear are suitable for the office or for a night on the town. For both men and women, trenches and safaris are definitely a good way to spruce up an outfit to make you look sophisticated, stylish and most of all, keep you comfortable in mild weather.
It looks like the frenzied check-patterned Burberry (the women’s violet is uber fancy) is the leader when it comes to chic outwear (no surprise), but it is a bit disappointing that there is a lack of belted safaris (not trenches) when it comes to the men’s side. Even so, the white Cole Haan is clean and tight, while the yellow trench is a modernized hip makeover of the yellow raincoat. I am sure as the word gets out, these jackets will invade the world like a “London Fog†– pun intended.

We’d normally feature these shoes in our shopping blog but we happen to think they are groundbreaking news for the modern working woman. Not only are these folding shoes some of the coolest-looking around, but they also come in a nifty folding pouch that isn’t even the size of one of your old, smelly sneaks. Perfect for throwing in your gym bag, purse or even carrying in hand, these shoes will silence your complaints about walking to work forever.

Last week, Target launched a stylishly priced (e.g. cheap!) line of women’s clothing and accessories designed by British designer Luella Bartley. Very cute stuff overall, and the pieces definitely have the markings of Luella’s British eclecticism. But get them while you can—the line is only in stores for 90 days!
Our favorite clothing picks?
Luella Waist Tab Jacket Deep Navy | $39.99 at Target
Nice tailoring here.
Luella SS Woven Ruffle Shirt | $19.99 at Target
The ruffle is just adorable!
Luella Grommet Tulip Skirt Squire Green | $24.99 at Target
Cute cut, adorable belt loops, and who can resist a tulip skirt?

Last December, we featured a particularly posh sweater from Anthropologie that mysteriously disappeared off the face of the earth (ok, fine, their website) early the next week. While browsing the online aisles this evening, however, we found it again!
Back by popular demand is the Copenhagen Cardigan, in a new, but perhaps not improved color. Enjoy!
