You can embrace 1980s style without pulling out your off the shoulder tops and shoulderpads. Even better, you can pull off the retro look in style. The key is to nod to the past without copying it verbatim. We’ve crafted an outfit that combines a few key 1980s trends (bright color, sweatshirt tops, and body-conscious skirts) without making it look like you’re partying like it’s 1989. Here’s how to get the modern 1980s look:
1. Start with a fitted base layer: a sweatshirt top and a banded skirt. Both the sweatshirt top and the body-hugging skirt nod to 1980s trends (oversized sweatshirts, bandage dresses). Added bonus points for the cartoon dinosaur top, which adds a bit of humor to the otherwise edgy outfit.
2. Add a shot of bright color with a loosely fitted jacket. The contrast of the oversized jacket with the fitted base makes the silhouette more visually interesting.
3. Finish off the look with a pair of cage-inspired booties. We love the edginess of the uber-strappy ankle boots.

March to the beat of your own music and outfit yourself in comfy casual basics with a twist. This look, which pairs a slouchy hoodie with a fitted base layer, feels very downtown cool. How to get the look? The beauty is in the details, which make these basics feel new again. Here’s how to achieve casual chic in a hoodie:
1. Start with a fitted, patterned top and a pair of straight leg jeans. We love the plaid pattern on this empire waist top–very on-trend.
2. Layer on an oversized hoodie to contrast with the fitted style of the top. Bonus points for bright colors (like this bluish purple) and interesting details (like the double rows of buttons).
3. Slip on a pair of tall boots. Tuck the jeans into the boots to show off the lacing and the buckle detail.
4. Finish off the look with a roomy tote - and (optional) a pair of old-school, full sized headphones to connect to your iPod.

You don’t have to put away your summer dresses when the temperatures start to drop. The beauty of fall layering is that your summer clothes can be just as wearable as they were when temperatures were soaring. The key is just to pair them with different clothes. For summer, you would pair your minidress with strappy sandals and sunscreen. But for fall, you can pair the same dress with textured tights, ankle booties, and an oversized jacket. Here’s how to get the summer dress look this fall:
1. Start with the foundation of a warm weather minidress.
2. Keep your legs covered up with textured tights and ankle boots.
3. Layer on an oversized jacket, which contrasts with the slim fit of the minidress.
4. Finish off the look with a lightweight scarf (note how the small plaid echoes the larger buffalo check plaid pattern on the dress) and a handheld tote.

Q: Skinny jeans are the rage for fall, but some of us aren’t tall and a size 2. How can regular sized folks with a bit of muffin top translate the look?
A: Well said! Though skinny jeans appear to be ubiquitous, they’re certainly not for everybody (though, I might add, they’re great for women with short legs, as they make their legs look longer and leaner - I promise!). But if your personal architecture is steering you away from the severe, skinny cut of these pants, you can get a similar look with straight leg jeans. Straight leg jeans are easier to wear, especially if your figure isn’t as clean as that of a model.
In order to find the most figure flattering pair of jeans, I look for stretch styles, which help smooth out bumps and other figure imperfections, while maintaining a slim silhouette. One other tip for finding jeans that flatter "a bit of a muffin top" is to look for jeans with a higher rise, as the muffin top will be less prominent. Last thoughts? In order to camouflage any remaining "puffing" out of the jeans, look for a top that blouses out at the point where it overlaps with the jeans. Here’s how to get the look of skinny jeans for Real People:
1. Start with a pair of straight leg, stretchy jeans for a figure flattering yet slim silhouette.
2. Add a voluminous blouse on top for a big-over-small look. Note how the blouse skims over your middle, creating the appearance of a slim figure regardless of your personal architecture.
3. Skinny jeans are traditionally paired with booties, pumps, or flats. Here, we’ve paired these straight jean replacements with a fun pair of yellow flats to keep the outfit youthful in spirit.
4. Finish off the outfit with your favorite handbag or clutch. This straw bow clutch (and the entire outfit) will take you to a outdoors get-together with friends.

You don’t have to stop pairing your ankle boots with summer sundresses when Fall breezes on in. Just toss on a light jacket and accessorize. In this Summer-to-Fall transition outfit, we’ve mixed hard with soft, casual with formal, rugged with sophisticated. Here’s how to get the summer sundress and ankle boots look this Fall:
1. Start with your basic summer sundress. We recommend a belt at the waistline to give it a bit more structure, depending on the dress.
2. Layer on a light jacket. We’ve mixed the floaty sundress wiht a structured tuxedo style jacket for a look that’s playful meets serious.
3. Finish off the look with a pair of ankle boots (note how that nice brown goes with the blue on the dress) and a handbag slung over your shoulder.

Skinny Pants, Menswear Vests, Motorcycle Jackets, Zipper Detailing, Ankle Boots, Concert T-Shirts, Schoolboy Blazers - all of these (and more) combine to form a foundation wardrobe for the Rock and Roll girl. But how do you combine these pieces for an effortlessly thrown together (but still put together) look? Here’s three outfits that show you how to get the effortless Rock and Roll style:
Schoolboy Blazer + Floaty Top + Skinny Jeans
1. Start with a floaty, sequined top over a pair of skinny jeans. We love how the peach on the top pairs with the grey–and the dark blue of the jeans.
2. Add a schoolboy blazer, left open enough so that the color of the floaty top can shine through.
3. Accessorize with a blue plaid scarf tied at the neck, a pair of lace up boots, and a handbag slung over the shoulder.
Floaty Dress + Skinny Jeans + Motorcycle Jacket
1. Start with a floaty dress, belted, over a pair of skinny jeans. Becaues the dress is black, we decided to try a lighter pair of pants.
2. Layer on the motorcycle jacket, which adds a degree of toughness to the floaty, lacy dress.
3. Accessorize with a pair of oversized sunglasses, a layered necklace, a faux snakeskin bag, and a pair of ankle boots.
Graphic Tank + Punky Skirt + Menswear Vest
1. Start with a graphic tank (don’t you love the grafitti) and a punky miniskirt. We love the mix of grafitti and art with this combo.
2. Layer on a menswear vest, left open.
3. Slip on a pair of knee-high boots to give your legs some more coverage.

Tulip Skirts, which feature gathers at the waistline and a more fitted hem, are great for women who are looking to create the illusion of hips. Boyish shaped women, and women who have a curvier top half - rejoice! In order to create the most figure flattering look, we love a small-over-big silhouette for the Tulip Skirt. Here’s how to wear a Tulip Skirt:
1. Start with a small over big silhouette - a fitted tank over the bigger tulip skirt. We love how the two blues work together, as well as how the ruffles on the tank echo the soft gathers on the skirt.
2. Layer on a cropped sweater. We love the structured feel of this sweater, which contrasts with the floaty skirt. The mustard color also contrasts nicely with the shades of blue in the top and the skirt.
3. Finish off the outfit with a nice clutch handbag and a pair of low heels.

One part prim and proper, one part youthful and fun, this outfit has Blair Waldorf written all over it. And it’s proof that prep school style doesn’t have to be stuffy or boring. We’ve given prep school clothes a fun twist with a pair of short shorts and a brightly colored handbag. Here’s how to get the look of a collegiate who’s not afraid to let her hair down:
1. Start with a prim and proper shirt: a button down featuring a tuxedo-like ruffle at center front.
2. Add a pair of short shorts, tucking the button down shirt into the shorts. We love the self-belt, which is sweetly tied with a bow.
3. Toss on a cardigan, tied over your shoulders until it gets cooler in the evening. Bonus prep points for the two little pockets and the crest detailing.
4. Finish the look off with a pair of mid-heel pumps (high heels would be a bit much for shorts this short) and a brightly colored handbag. Bright orange pairs well with the greys in the outfit.

Q: I like the idea of a minidress, but my style isn’t too girly. What should I wear it with?
A: Yup, it seems that it’s officially minidress week here at Omiru. We love minidresses, but we agree that they can be a bit precious. How do you balance out a delicate minidress so that the overall look isn’t too twee? Pair it with harder elements to give the look an edge. Here’s how to get the minidress and leather look:
1. Start with a delicate minidress. Notice how the ruffly tiers add a sense of femininity to the already girly dress.
2. Slip on a leather jacket. We love how the buttery brown pairs with the red and blue in the dress.
3. Finish off the look with a pair of killer heels (look at the heel height! and the cuffed ankle!) and a clutch.

Traditionally, belts are worn at or near your waistline. But what would happen if you broke that unspoken sartorial rule? You could change up your entire look! With that one simple change, you can take a look from pretty to punky. Here’s how to get a whole new look with a well-placed belt:
1. Start with a drapey top–either knit or woven. The key is to choose a top that has a degree of volume.
2. Cinch in that volume with a belt. Skinny belts are going to work best, as they rein in the volume without visually cutting you in two. We love placing the belt under the bust to create your own version of an empire waist top.
3. Building on the edgy vibe of the self-belted top, slip on a pair of distressed jeans. Nothing too tailored, nothing too elegant.
3. Class up the outfit with a tailored blazer. We love how the stark white blazer contrasts with the distressed denim–and allows the self-belted top to peek out.
4. Finish off the look with a pair of heels (t-strap heels are fun and flirty) and a punky looking bag.
