Style tip? What cold weather accessory do you need to add instant chic to your outfit? The glove. Fall 2010’s runways saw a versatile variety of gloves, both short and long. How to integrate gloves into your cold weather wardrobe? Try long, above-the-elbow length gloves with a floor length gown for glamour. Knit fingerless gloves for a bit of sporty action. Or even puffer gloves, juxtaposed against something feminine, to protect you from the cold winter.

Style tip? Leather was huge on the runways of Fall 2010 in all kinds of incarnations. Along with the usual leather jackets and motorcycle-inspired gear, we saw the rise of the leather dress. To tone down the hardness of the leather dress, designers decided to soften the look with cutouts. How to get the look of cutouts? The traditional cutout (as seen at Herve Leger) removes strategic sections of the garment in slivers. But we also loved seeing cutouts as a texture. The cutouts on the Cushnie et Ochs tunic and the Diane von Furstenberg dress made us see this garment detail in a whole new light.

Style tip? Fall 2009’s emphasis on the shoulder continues into Fall 2010. But it’s not the same old shoulder for 2010. What first arose as a throwback to the 1980s, the strong shoulder has evolved past the plain jane shoulderpads into something more sophisticated - and decidedly more feminine. Try a poufy shawl, as at Marc Jacobs, to provide a womanly emphasis on the shoulderline. Or do as Derek Lam does, and draw emphasis to the shoulder with tailored colorblocking. Not your cup of tea? Then emphasize your shoulderline with interesting detailing - such as the oversized piping at Yigal Azrouel. How do you wear the strong shoulder? Boldly and proudly. There’s just no other way.

Style tip? Got shine? If you don’t already have metallics in your closet, go out and pick up a piece with some shine. Go all out with a cocktail dress or evening gown with head to toe shine. Or dip your toes into the trend with a dress or top with metallic detailing, such as the icicle detailing on the BCBG look. Or go bold with a shiny top - or, if you dare, pair of pants.

Style tip? Calling all longwaisted women - we have good news for Fall 2010! The highwaisted pant is still in style. Rock your highwaisted pants with a something fitted and cropped up top, as at Cynthia Rowley. Or go bold with a dramatic coat and an oversized collar, as at Charlotte Ronson. Or if you dare, try a bold colored highwaisted pant, like the bright orange number at Philip Lim. Bonus tip for highwaisted pant figure flattery? Accentuate your raised waistline with a belt to visually create some extra curves.

Style tip? Plaid continues its reign as fashion’s favorite fabric for Fall 2010. While the plaid shirt is an easy way to snag this trend, we encourage you to go a bit further with this fabric. We love the look of a plaid dress, either in strapless or sleeved forms. Or, if you dare, try the plaid pants, paired with a top in like colors. What to wear with plaid? Juxtapose this classic fabric against something with a bit more edge - be it a leather jacket, moto boots, or a pair of killer sunglasses.

Style tip? Bows may be reminiscent of childhood party dresses and adolescent headbands, but they need not be just for girls. Women can wear bows too - just in a different, and age-appropriate way. Skip the frills and the too-pretty pastels and wear bows with a bit of a twist. A few ideas? Abstract bows, as seen in the subtle bodice draping at Lela Rose. Tailored bows, as in the tight black bow finishing off a blazer, button-down shirt, and shorts at Charlotte Ronson. Last but not least, glamorous bows, like the glittering, shiny bow detail finishing off the delicate pastel dress at Marc Jacobs.

Photo Credit: NYMag.comReturn of the 1970s at Marc Jacobs, Vena Cava, and Peter Som.
Style tip? It may be 2010, but it felt like the year 1970 on the runways. Bohemian prints, maxi dresses, and flowing vests and sashes all graced the runways. How to get the look of the 1970s, but circa 2010? Make maxi dresses and bohemian dresses look modern with muted, more neutral colors. And accent your look with a bold lip color for a look that’s less au naturel and more modern sophisticate.

Style tip? What item of clothing can complement a dress just as well as a tee and jeans? The parka, that’s what. Parkas are the jacket of choice to pair with both casual and more formal outfits. We love the parka for its versatility and its comfort - plus, the hood and the extra pockets make it as practical as it is fashionable. Wear your oversized parka with slim fit clothes for a classic big-over-small look.

Photo Credit: NYMag.comLingerie & Lace at Cynthia Steffe, Alexander Wang, and Herve Leger.
Style tip? In 1990, Madonna introduced the world to underwear as outerwear with her iconic cone bra. Twenty years later, lingerie is still inspiring the world of sportswear. Case in point? Alexander Wang’s lingerie-meets-tailored suit look, which mixes feminine lace with masculine fabrications and tailoring. Then again, the lingerie influence need not be quite that overt. Cynthia Steffe suggested frilly underthings with a fitted ivory dress full of tiny pleats. And Herve Leger’s body conscious look merely outlined the bodice and skirt suggestively. How to wear lingerie & lace inspired looks in real life? We love the mix of masculine and feminine - a lacy cami under a structured blazer, a slip-type skirt with something more tailored up top. The key is to suggest rather than to show.
