Style tip?
This jewel tone looks great on fair skin tones and dark skin tones alike.  What colors should you pair teal with?  Try navy or green for a thoroughly cool look, or warm up the teal with brown (as seen at BCBG).

Fall 2008 Fashion Week Trend: Sequins and Shine

Shine at Rag & Bone, Abaete, and Yigal Azrouel.

Style tip?
Shiny fabrics tend to visually enlarge the figure, so wear accordingly.  Runway models (and those with slender figures) can get away with allover shine, but the rest of us should restrict shine to a single part of our outfits.  If you love your legs, for example, you can draw attention towards them with a shiny skirt.

If you do dare to wear a shiny dress, though, it doesn’t hurt to try a tummy tucker underneath.  Tummy tuckers, like the ones made by Spanx, smooth out any figure bumps and blemishes and prevent them from being spotlighted by the shine.

What do you think?  Would you wear sequins and shine?  And if so, with what?  Share your thoughts in the comments!

Fall 2008 Fashion Week Trend: Tuxedo Detailing

Style tip?  For this menswear-as-womenswear look, try one piece at a time for best results.  Go with the ruffled tuxedo shirt, the vest, or the menswear trousers.  Just not all three at once.

For women with a small bust, the tuxedo ruffles will do wonders to visually maximize your bustline.

Trend Alert: The Casual Wedding

For years and years, the black tie wedding was de rigeur.  Tuxes.  Long white gowns.  Same old, same old.  But now, it seems that the uber-formal Black Tie Wedding is starting to take a backseat to the Casual Wedding.

Earlier this month, we advised one of our male readers (Phil) about what to wear to his casual wedding.  In the comments, Ria chimed in about her own casual wedding, held this past summer.  Said Ria, "We had a casual wedding, no ties! Well, no ties for the guests. My husband wore a tie but no jacket, same with the groomsmen. Just putting it out there as an alternative. It was hot so no jackets or vests worked for us, but the ties added to the wedding party style."

Indeed, the wedding party exuded style.  Ria’s pictures, below, show that you don’t have to dress to the nines to look fabulous at your wedding.  All you have to do is capture your own personal style.

Ria\'s Wedding: Wedding Party and a Beach Blue Sky
Ria: "The green bridesmaid carnation bouquets matched my husband’s shirt, and their sashes matched the colour of my dress."

Ria\'s Wedding: Table
Ria: "The handmade family recipe books had green accents in the printing and purple ribbons, and the mini menus at each place had blue trim."

Ria\'s Wedding: Wedding Cake
Ria’s cousin Katherine whipped up the wedding cake and cupcakes, each of which had a special design on top.  Ria’s husband, Johann, is into frogs, and his favorite color is green–so the wedding cake featured an adorable frog couple.

You Said: Bright Yellow is In!

Omiru Poll Result: Bright Yellow is In!

Cherbourg Coat

We asked: Is Bright Yellow In or Out?

You said:  In, with a landslide 78% of the vote!

Style tip?  This sunny shade has the power to brighten the dreariest of days.  Beat the rain, snow, or slush with a punch of bright yellow–on a dress or overcoat if you dare.  Feeling less adventurous?  Try a bright yellow headband, scarf, or handbag.  Looks especially fetching paired with grey.

Next question: Leggings remain a winter staple, especially for this season’s 80s inspired looks.  But would you wear them? Cast your
vote on the sidebar!

You Said: Faded Light Blue Denim is Out!

Omiru Poll Result: Light Blue Denim is Out

H81 Straight Leg Jean

We asked: Is Light Blue Denim In or Out?

You said:  Out, with an overwhelming 83% of the vote!

Style tip?  If you’re going to wear light blue denim, do it right: wear it with white.  A crisp–or silky–white top classes up the faded denim look in a flash.

Next question: Bright Yellow: is it too sunny for winter’s rainy days, or is it just right?  Cast your
vote on the sidebar!

Dolly Pleat Tunic

We asked: Is Roaring 20s Fashion In or Out?

You said:  In, with an overwhelming 81% of the vote!

Style tip?  Dropped waist dresses, like the gorgeously cheap chic ruby dress to the left, are a godsend for shortwaisted women (those with short torsos and long legs).

Next question: Light blue denim–so 80s, yet somehow relevant today.  Would you wear it?  Cast your
vote on the sidebar!

Omiru Poll Result: Leopard Print is Out!

Tibi Leopard Shift Dress

We asked: Is Leopard Print In or Out?

You said:  Out. 29% voted Leopard Print In, while the vast majority (71%) voted it Out or On the Way Out.

Style tip?  Should you choose to wear leopard print, do it differently.  How about trying Leopard Print in an unusual color, like this blue Tibi dress?

Next question: 1920s Fashion–bowler hats, flapper-esque drop waist dresses, chic ballet flats.  Would you wear it?  Cast your
vote on the sidebar!

Omiru Poll Result: Oversized Handbags are In!

Omiru Poll Result: Oversized Handbags are In

MAXX NEW YORK \'Fenway\' Patent Bowler

We asked: Are Oversized Handbags In or Out?

You said:  In, with 60% of the popular vote.

Omiru’s take: Not a big surprise. The hottest handbags now are not only big–but also boldly colored with the acid brights of the season.

Style tip?  Choose an oversized handbag appropriate to your size.  If you’re petite, you’re not going to want to carry the giant hobo bag that your 6 ft counterpart is hauling around.  Oh, and even though you have plenty of room in your bag, keep the stuff in your bag to a minimum.  Better for your back, and it’s just good habit for when bags go small again.

Omiru Poll Result: Plaid is IN!

Omiru Poll Result: Plaid is In!

John Varvatos Cotton Plaid Sportshirt

We asked: Is Plaid In or Out?

You said:  In, with 60% of the popular vote.

Omiru’s take: Like we’ve said, we’ve had our qualms about plaid, but we’re really warming up to it this season.  There’s something so rich about the bold pattern and the great shirts that are in stores this season.

Style tip?  For women, look for feminine detailing (e.g. ruffles, pleating) to soften the look.  For men, create an outfit around the plaid pattern, pairing it with simple pieces–such as dark denim.  Want more tips?  Check out John’s article about How to Wear Flannel Stylishly and Trisha’s How to Wear a Plaid Shirt Without Looking Like a Man.

Next question: The Handbag: Just as hemlines rise and fall, it goes from big to small, small to big.  But what’s your preference?  Tell us, are Oversized Handbags In,
or are they Out? Cast your
vote on the sidebar!
