Brooches at Verrier, Rag & Bone, and United Bamboo.

Style tip?  There’s nothing quite like a brooch to add a dose of instant style to an outfit.  You can go big (a la Carrie from Sex and the City), or you can try a smaller piece in an eye catching color or texture.

Fall 2009 Fashion Week Trend: Capes and Capelets

Capes and Capelets at Jeremy Laing, Y-3, and Tuleh.

Style tip?  Capes and Capelets add a posh, Euro chic touch to any outfit.  They’re a great layering piece and can add texture (as at Tuleh), a sleek sophistication (as at Jeremy Laing), and warmth (as at Y-3).  Capelets are lovely on petite women, while full length capes are better worn by taller women.

Fall 2009 Fashion Week Trend: Layered Dresses

Layered Dresses at Karen Walker, DKNY, and Rag & Bone.

Style tip?  You don’t have to stick your short sleeved and sleeveless dresses into storage when it’s cold out.  Just layer them over a long sleeved shirt or sweater.  Solids are safe, but don’t you love the visual texture of the grey dress over the green and grey stripes?  Gorgeous.

Fall 2009 Fashion Week Trend: Deep Blue

Deep Blue at Lela Rose, Lacoste, and Tuleh.

Style tip?  Blue is such a relaxing color, and it’s a perfect shade for cool weather days.  For the longest, leanest look, you can wear blue head to toe.  But blue doesn’t have to be boring - for more visual variety, combine different shades of blue in the same outfit, as in the Lacoste example.

Fall 2009 Fashion Week Trend: Collarless Coats

Collarless Coats at Verrier, Jeremy Laing, and DKNY.

Style tip?  What’s the opposite of the oversized collar?  No collar at all.  Wear your collarless coat with a crewnecked shirt to echo the shape of the coat neckline.  For extra style points, you may also want to try coats with different neckline shapes, like the angled silhouette at Jeremy Laing.

Fall 2009 Fashion Week Trend: Bold and Beautiful Necklaces

Bold and Beautiful Necklaces at Jason Wu, Reem Acra, and Lela Rose.

Style tip?  While they’re tough to wear, bold and beautiful necklaces truly do give you star power.  The trick to wearing the necklace (instead of having it wear you)?  Go easy on the rest of your outfit - no crazy silhouettes, eye popping patterns, or rainbow colors.  Just keep it simple to let your bold and beautiful necklace shine.

Fall 2009 Fashion Week Trend: Cropped Pants

Cropped Pants at Abaete, Verrier, and Lacoste.

Style tip?  Cropped pants are usually a Spring/Summer trend, but they’re hanging on for Fall/Winter 2009.  Probably not a good move for super cold climates (unless you cover up with tall boots), but do-able for warmer locales.  In order to look your longest and leanest, do as the Lacoste model (pictured right) does: wear boots or socks in a similar color to your pants to create an unbroken visual line from toe to waist.

Fall 2009 Fashion Week Trend: Statement Plaid

Statement Plaid at Lela Rose, Diane von Furstenberg, and DKNY.

Style tip?  Plaid was big last year, and it’s going to be huge next Fall and Winter (and likely beyond).  Mix up your basic plaid wardrobe with some statement plaid prints.  Try an oversized repeat (like the Lela Rose and DKNY dresses) or a rainbow assortment of colors (as seen in the Diane von Furstenberg jacket).

You Said: Yes to Sweaterdresses

omiru-poll-result-sweaterdresses-are-in_020809

drop-waist-sweater-dress_020509We asked: Would you wear Sweaterdresses?

You said:  Yes to Sweaterdresses, with a 68% to 32% vote.

Style tip? Sweaterdresses are so chic - yet they can be so difficult to wear.   To flatter a less-than-perfect figure, we suggest wearing sweaterdresses in stiffer, heavier knits.  Why?  Thinner, more body-skimming knits tend to reveal every bump and blemish.  For further figure flattery (try saying that three times fast!), body slimming undergarments and shapewear from companies like Spanx work like a charm.

Next question: Pastel Colors are classic Spring, but they can wash out fair complexions…and they’re just not for everyone.  Tell us, would you wear Pastel Colors?  Cast your vote on the sidebar!

You Said: Yes to Textured Tights

wolford-twiggy-tights_020109We asked: Would you wear Textured Tights?

You said:  Yes to Textured Tights, with a 73% to 27% vote.

Style tip? Textured tights are a great way to add flavor to an otherwise plain outfit.  Especially if you like to dress in one (or a couple) colors head to toe, you’re going to want some visual variety in your wardrobe.  A super simple way to get this visual variety is through texture.  Pair your textured tights, for example, with a sleek pair of boots and a dress in a different fabric.  Even if you’re dressing in one color from head to toe, the outfit still holds visual interest.

Next question: Sweaterdresses are a chic cold weather option, but they can also be tough to wear (especially if the sweater fabric is thin).  Tell us, would you wear Sweaterdresses?  Cast your vote on the sidebar!

Pictured: Wolford Twiggy Tights | $46 (approx) at Wolford.  Sure, they’re expensive — but they’re worth the splurge for the fit, quality, and superb pattern.
