Spring 2010 Fashion Week Trend: Animal Prints

Animal Prints at LAMB, Diane von Furstenberg, and Monique Lhuillier.

Style tip?  Unleash your inner animal with gorgeous leopard, zebra, and reptile prints.  Wear a single print - as at LAMB and Monique Lhuillier - or mix things up with multiple animal prints (as seen at Diane von Furstenberg).  Not so sure about animal prints?  Try a leopard or zebra print scarf, paired with a slouchy tee and slim leg pants.

Spring 2010 Fashion Week Trend: Vests 2.0

Vests 2.0 at Charlotte Ronson, Cynthia Steffe, and Ports 1961.

Style tip?  Vests are a wonderful layering item for Spring (and Fall, for that matter, where they fit neatly under jackets and overcoats).  And we’re loving the blossoming variety of Vest styles that we’re seeing this season.  Charlotte Ronson’s vest is the closest to the standard tailored variety we’ve been seeing for the last few seasons - but this one feels more like a sleeveless jacket.  Cynthia Steffe’s vest feels more utility - like a woman’s version of a fisherman’s vest, paired with pretty florals instead of trouser pants.  And Ports 1961’s vest goes bold with metallic embellishments and a full-length silhouette.  So go on, have some fun with Vests - and don’t be afraid to contrast styles - masculine with feminine, soft with hard, and shine with matte.

Spring 2010 Fashion Week Trend: Vibrant Yellow

Vibrant Yellow at Cynthia Steffe, Preen, and Monique Lhuillier.

Style tip?  What we love about vibrant yellow is that it’s upbeat, yet somehow relaxed (think "mellow yellow").  It looks great on tanned and darker skin tones.  For Asian women, try a bright shade of yellow (like the sunny shade seen at Preen).  What color shoes to pair with yellow?  You can’t go wrong with grey.

Mens Fall Fashion Preview: Five Pieces You Need for Fall 2009

Guys, it’s time to start embracing Fall Fashion.  Key menswear trends include a strong Americana vibe that gives a nod to quirky British style.  Think preppy classics with special details - but details that don’t take themselves too seriously.  Our sartorial recommendation for the season?  Invest in classic pieces that will keep your look sharp not only for Fall 2009, but for Fall 2010 and beyond.  Here’s five pieces that you’ll want to have in your wardrobe for seasons to come:

The 3/4 Length Duffle Coat

gloverall-made-in-london-duffle-coat_090809
Gloverall Made in London Duffle Coat | $459.75 at ASOS
How to wear it: Make the bright red color really pop with a pair of dark denim jeans.

The Classic Flannel Shirt

Lightweight Flannel Shirt | $34.99 at Gap
How to wear it: Pair this cozy flannel shirt with gray denim and distressed boots for a look that’s urban meets rugged.

The Bright Layering Tee
cotton-waffle-knit-crewneck_090809
Cotton Waffle Knit Crewneck | $40 at Banana Republic
How to wear it: Let a bit of color peek out from under your gray or navy cardigan.  Added bonus for you?  The extra soft waffle knit fabric.

The Slim Shawl Collar Cardigan

asos-cable-knit-sweat-cardigan_090809
Cable Knit and Sweat Cardigan | $64.37 at ASOS
How to wear it: Wear this shawl collared cardigan over a slim fit shirt.  We love the texture of the cable knit pattern, which pairs nicely with other coarse textures like a medium wale corduroy.

The Sporty Quilted Jacket
quilted-four-pocket-jacket_090809
Quilted Four Pocket Jacket | $200 at Banana Republic
How to wear it: We love how you can take this chic quilted jacket anywhere this Fall.  Whether you’re catching a game or strolling downtown, this jacket is a practical, stylish choice.  Pair it with a bright scarf for a playful look.

Five Fall 2009 Womenswear Trends Under $100

Labor Day is over, so it’s time to start saying goodbye to Summer and hello to Fall.  And while we’ll miss the carefree days and warm weather, we’re looking forward to the drama and layering of Fall fashion.  As we approach Fashion Week Spring 2010, we’re taking a look back to our favorite looks from Fashion Week Fall 2009.  Our favorite looks feature bold silhouettes–and great details that make the looks as exciting close-up as they are from far away.  Here’s our top 5 trends from Fashion Week Fall 2009 - each for under $100:

The Structured Coat
asos-pintuck-mac_090709
ASOS Pintuck Mac | $82.76 at ASOS
How to wear it: Let a pretty blouse spill out from under this gorgeous pintucked mac jacket.  Finish off the look with a pair of killer heels.

The Dramatic Sweater

ilana-dolman-sweater_090709
Ilana Dolman Sweater | $44.50 at Delias
How to wear it: Go for a dramatic big-over-small look by pairing this roomy dolman sweater with straight leg or skinny jeans.

The Asymmetric Zipper

rare-asymmetric-zip-dress_090709
Rare Asymmetric Zip Dress | $55.17 at ASOS
How to wear it: This asymmetric zip dress makes a statement by itself - so no need to go overboard on accessories.  A sleek clutch and a pair of heels will do the trick.

The Color Grey

drawstring-sweater-top_090709
Drawstring Sweater Top | $24.90 at Heritage 1981
How to wear it: Use this deep grey sweater as a layering piece.  Don’t you love the texture of the knit?

The Disco Influence

sequin-one-shoulder-top_090709
Sequin One Shoulder Top | $19.80 at Forever 21
How to wear it: Party like it’s 2009 in clothes that would have worked equally well in 1979.  Since sequins are so eye-catching, we recommend opting for a partially sequined top (or dress) instead of one that’s completely covered.  Keep this dramatic top company with a pair of chic booties.

You Said: Yes to Wedge Heels

omiru-poll-result-wedge-heels_083009

sasha-open-cut-wedges_083009We asked: Would you wear Wedge Heels?

You said:  Yes to Wedge Heels, with a landslide 81% to 19% vote.

Style tip? Heels, as always, are big on the trend radar.  The twist this time around is Wedge Heels, which provide a stable platform on which to walk (great news for those of us who want a few extra inches without the pain that comes from high heels).  Because Wedge Heels give you that stable platform, they also visually weigh the foot down.  If you want the stability without all of the visual weight, try an open wedge, like the shoe shown at left.

Next question: Roomy, Pleated Pants are a big trend for Fall.  But what do you think?  Tell us, would you wear Pleated Pants?  Cast your vote on the sidebar!

You Said: No to Jumpsuits

omiru-poll-result-jumpsuits_082309

drawstring-waist-jumpsuit_082309We asked: Would you wear a Jumpsuit?

You said:  A resounding NO to Jumpsuits, with a landslide 84% to 16% vote.

Style tip? While the Jumpsuit makes getting dressed easy (one piece, and you’re done), it still has its challenges, as the poll result indicates.  For summer, we think that a short romper, paired with pumps, is your best bet.  For autumn, you’ll want to go with a longer style, like this casual knit jumpsuit.  The key is to work with the laid-back feel of the jumpsuit and pair it with the appropriate accessories: a statement necklace, a waist-defining belt, and sandals.

Next question: Wedge Heels are the new shoe silhouette for Fall–for sandals, pumps, and even booties.  They give you height, but they also can be kind of clunky.  But what do you think?  Tell us, would you wear Wedge Heels?  Cast your vote on the sidebar!

You Said: Yes to Ankle Boots

omiru-poll-result-ankle-boots_081609

gambia-slouchy-boot_081609We asked: Would you wear Ankle Boots?

You said:  Yes to Ankle Boots, with a 69% to 31% vote.

Style tip? We’re pleased to see that Ankle Boots are being elevated from a questionable boot style to a year-round shoe staple.  While they can be intimidating at first, they become instantly more accessible once you experiment and learn what they work with.  For summer, we love pairing ankle boots with floaty dresses for a look that’s feminine with an edge.  We’re also experimenting with non-traditional bootie styles - such as this above-ankle slouchy boot style.

Next question: The Jumpsuit makes getting dressed easy–just slip it on, and you’re good to go.  But what do you think?  Tell us, would you wear a Jumpsuit?  Cast your vote on the sidebar!

You Said: Yes to Tulip Skirts

omiru-poll-result-tulip-skirts_080909

silk-blend-printed-skirt_080909We asked: Would you wear a Tulip Skirt?

You said:  Yes to Tulip Skirts, with a 61% to 39% vote.

Style tip? While we love the Tulip Skirt, it is certainly not for everyone.  The gathers at the waistline don’t do women with prominent hips any favors.  But for those women who are curvier on top, the Tulip Skirt can help balance out your figure.  We love pairing the Tulip Skirt with a closer-fitting top, like a tank and sweater combo.  For boyish figures, the addition of a belt at the waistline also helps to create the illusion of a curvier figure.

Next question: Ankle boots - we can’t pass a store window without seeing these ubiquitous shoes.  But what do you think?  Tell us, would you wear Ankle Boots?  Cast your vote on the sidebar!

You Said: Yes to Minidresses

omiru-poll-result-minidresses_080209

nautical-stripe-dress_080209We asked: Would you wear a Minidress?

You said:  Yes to Minidresses, with a 54% to 46% vote.

Style tip? We love the minidress–it’s the epitome of breezy chic.  While it’s great for women with gorgeous legs, it can still work for those of us who don’t have a perfect bottom half.  If you’re looking to make your legs longer and leaner, try wearing tights underneath your minidress.  You’ll see an extra slimming effect with dark colored tights.  Another option for those of us who are less inclined to show off our legs is to wear the minidress over leggings or skinny pants.

Next question: The Tulip Skirt features gathers at the waistline and a slimmer silhouette at the hem.  And we’re seeing it all over.  But what do you think?  Tell us, would you wear a Tulip Skirt?  Cast your vote on the sidebar!
