Style tip? The trend for Spring 2010 is polka dots with a twist. The new polka dot is seen oversized, textured (instead of printed), and organically shaped. Wear a single type of dot (like the crocheted dots at Tory Burch), or mix things up with different patterns (as at Marc by Marc Jacobs). But don’t stop there - you can also mix different textures of dot patterns, as Reem Acra did with a standard-issue polka dotted top paired with a skirt with a more organic dot pattern.

Style tip? If you want to make a statement with your shoes, go bright and step into a pair of red (or red-orange) shoes. They provide a colorful foundation for a neutral colored outfit (as at Philip Lim), but they also anchor patterns. Case in point? The dresses at Nanette Lepore and Marc by Marc Jacobs. When you go bold with bright shoes, there’s no need for your handbag to match. Try a neutral colored handbag (perhaps in a oversized silhouette) to finish off the look.

Style tip? Motorcycle jackets are already lending an edgy vibe to Fall fashion, and they’ll continue to keep fashion on its toes for Spring. You’ll traditionally find motorcycle jackets in black leather (or faux-leather, to be animal-friendly), but for Spring, you’ll have a variety of fabrication and color options. We love the squeaky cleanliness of a white motorcycle jacket - and the versatility of a khaki colored jacket. Wear it long (as at Philip Lim) or cropped (as at Tracy Reese) - just add one to your closet.

Style tip? Summer 2009 was minidress season - and it looks like Spring/Summer 2010 will be no different. So while you’ll want to put your minidresses into storage for Winter, keep them handy for Spring thaw. But even though hemlines are rising to well above knee level on the runway, it doesn’t mean that you have to match the short skirt in real life. A hemline falling a few inches above the knee maintains the essence of the mini silhouette without being unwearable.
Two tips for donning a minidress:
(1) If you’re baring your legs, keep your upper half covered up - with sleeves, a cardigan, or even a jacket draped over your shoulders.
(2) If you love the mini silhouette but have less than perfect legs, try wearing tights or leggings underneath the dress.

Style tip? If Spring 2010 is about showy silhouettes and bold designs, its signature color has to be Red. Red is the color of passion, of power, of love. And it works for both tailored and free-flowing looks. We love the bold power suit inspired look at Philip Lim (shown left), but we also have a deep appreciation for the gorgeously draped cascades of fabric on the Oscar de la Renta ballgown. Do as Oscar does and pair your red dress with a pair of bright gold shoes, whose hue works well with the red’s inherent warmth.

Style tip? Maybe it’s the influence of the film Coco Before Chanel, but the runways of Spring 2010 has Coco Chanel on their mind. Chanel’s signature boxy textured jackets were suspiciously prevalent this season, reinterpreted by designers from Tuleh to Derek Lam. We love the Chanel Jacket paired with a feminine skirt - whether it’s structured (as at Derek Lam) or flowy (as at Tuleh).

Style tip? Knotted detailing is, hands down, one of our favorite embellishment trends for Spring 2010. Knotting manages to exude elegance - yet it’s drama is captivating. Use the center of the knot to draw attention to your favorite part of your figure, whether it’s your bust (Thakoon), tummy (Diane von Furstenberg), or shoulderline (Carolina Herrera).

Style tip? Shorts are always In for Spring, but the trend story for Spring 2010 is the roomy, cuffed short. Available in both high waisted and normal rise varieties, the roomy cuffed short looks best worn with a somewhat fitted top. Belt the look to draw attention to your waistline - and to suggest a more hourglass-like silhouette.

Style tip? The Skinny Leg silhouette continues for Spring 2010. Wear it with a voluminous top (as at Twinkle). Alternatively, keep the look skinny from top to bottom and wear a fitted top with your skinny pants, as at LAMB. Want another idea? Up the drama factor with fun pieces - a furry shrug and a bold, textured necklace.

Style tip? Elegantly structured dresses in bright colors and abstract patterns are becoming a hallmark of Spring 2010 fashion. And they’re just the kind of dress you would pull out for a modern garden party. Wear them with a non-traditional shoe - instead of pairing them with a pair of demure pumps, why not try booties (a la Twinkle) or thick strap sandals (as at Marc by Marc Jacobs)?
