Spring 2009 Fashion Week Trend: Statement Pattern

Statement Pattern at Reyes, Costello Tagliapietra, and Lela Rose.

Style tip?
When you’re working with a bold, statement pattern, keep the shape of your dress simple, as at Costello Tagliapietra (center) and Lela Rose (right).  Or wear a top or skirt in the statement pattern and balance it out with a solid color.  The red Costello Tagliapietra pattern would look lovely in skirt format paired with a maroon top, wouldn’t it?

Bows at Lela Rose, DKNY, and Erin Fetherston.

Style tip?
When you’re wearing such a statement design detail, keep the rest of your outfit simple in color and pattern.  Isn’t that yellow-green bow coat from Lela Rose (pictured, left) outstanding?

Orange at ThreeAsFour, Reyes, and Verrier.

Style tip?  Bright orange is surprisingly versatile–and makes a striking statement.  Pair orange with other warm colors - golds (as seen at ThreeAsFour), chocolate browns (a la Reyes), and even warm shades of teal (as at Verrier).

You Said: Yes to Slouchy Sweaters!

Omiru Poll Result: Yes to Slouchy Sweaters

Gap Cowlneck SweaterWe asked: Would you wear Slouchy Sweaters?

You said:  Yes to Slouchy Sweaters, with 67% of the vote.

Style tip? The Slouchy Sweater is indeed going to be a key piece for Fall 2008.  We love the Slouchy Sweater belted and juxtaposed against a great pencil skirt or pair of menswear trousers.

Next question: Continuing on with Fall Trends, the biggest shoe trend we’re seeing is the Bootie–an ankle-length boot.  But what do you think?  Tell us, would you
wear the Ankle-Length Boot?  Cast your vote on the sidebar!

You Said: Yes to Gold!

Omiru Poll Result: Yes to Gold

Xhilaration Tanya Strappy SandalWe asked: Would you wear Gold?

You said:  Yes!  62% of you would wear Gold, with only 38% of you saying No to Gold.

Style tip? Gold is a warm colored metal, and it looks best with warm colors.  Think reds, oranges, and yellows, and warmer shades of blue, green, and purple.  Our favorite gold color combo?  Gold and a warm shade of purple with lots of reddish undertones.

Next question: With the whole menswear as womenswear look continuing for Fall, we’re seeing some great slouchy sweaters in stores.  But what do you think?  Tell us, would you wear The Slouchy Sweater?  Cast your vote on the sidebar!

You Said: Maybe to Mustard Yellow

You Said: Maybe to Mustard Yellow

Stretch Vintage Cord SkirtWe asked: Would you wear Mustard Yellow?

You said:  Maybe.  It was a close vote, with 53% of you saying Yes to Mustard Yellow, and the remaining 47% voting No.

Style tip? We’re fans of all things yellow, and mustard is no exception.  The muted hue looks great paired with navy blue (or even grey) for Autumn.  Until then, you can wear it with orange for a warm, earthy color combo.

Next question: We’ve been glued to the TV for the Olympics, where everyone’s gunning for Gold in Beijing.  Back at home, though, is Gold as appealing?  Tell us, would you wear Gold colored clothing?  Cast your vote on the sidebar!

You Said: No to Brightly Colored Jeans

You Said: No to Brightly Colored Jeans

Overdyed Matchstick JeansWe asked: Would you wear Brightly Colored Jeans?

You said:  Not so much.  65% of you said No to Brightly Colored Jeans, with only 35% saying Yes.

Style tip? Brightly colored Jeans don’t have to look like you stepped out of the 1980s.  They look amazingly fresh great paired with a brightly colored top in a complementary color.  Or try a top with metallic shine for a bit of extra sparkle.

Next question: Bright, sunny yellow has been a favorite of ours all summer.  For fall, though, yellow is becoming more muted, more mustardy in hue.  But what do you think?  Tell us, would you wear Mustard Yellow?  Cast your vote on the sidebar!

You Said: Maybe to Peasant Tops

You Said: Maybe to Peasant Tops

Silk Fringe Sleeve TopWe asked: Would you wear Peasant Tops?

You said:  Maybe.  For the second week in a row, the vote was pretty close, with 44% of you saying Yes to Peasant Tops and the remaining 56% saying No.

Style tip? The Peasant Blouse is by nature a feminine top.  We love pairing the feminine peasant blouse with a pair of menswear trousers for balance.  If you’re not so into the Peasant Blouse look, you may want to try a less literal interpretation of the shirt, as seen at left.

Next question: Speaking of comeback trends, Brightly Colored Jeans are back in the trend rotation this season.  But what do you think?  Tell us, would you wear Brightly Colored Jeans?  Cast your vote on the sidebar!

You Said: Maybe to Gladiator Sandals

Omiru Poll Result: Maybe to Gladiator Sandals

Mossimo Phoebe Bauble Gladiator SandalsWe asked: Would you wear Gladiator Sandals?

You said:  Maybe.  This vote was pretty close, with 52% of you saying No to Gladiator Sandals and the remaining 48% saying Yes.

Style tip? True to their name, gladiator sandals are by nature a somewhat aggressive shoe.  They bring a bit of an edge to an otherwise neutral outfit.  We love pairing gladiator sandals with pretty skirts and dresses to add a bit of a masculinity to an otherwise feminine outfit.

Next question: Remember when peasant tops were the It shirt of summer a few years ago?  Looks like they may be making a (small) comeback.  But what do you think?  Tell us, would you
wear Peasant Tops?  Cast your vote on the sidebar!

Omiru Poll Result: No to Giant Jewelry

Omiru Poll Result: No to Giant Jewelry

Rippled Antique CuffWe asked: Would you wear Giant Jewelry?

You said:  Probably Not.  A slight majority (57% of you) wouldn’t wear Giant Jewelry.

Style tip?  If you’re going to wear Giant Jewelry, be aware of your own proportions.  If you’re tiny, you’ll have to take extra care so that your jewelry doesn’t overwhelm your figure.  Giant, chunky necklaces are on-trend, but oversized bracelets (like the cuff shown) are going to be easier to wear.  Last tip?  Make your Giant Jewelry the centerpiece of your outfit by displaying it on a plain canvas of simple silhouettes.

Next question: Espadrilles are a classic summer shoe, but this year, Gladiator Sandals are taking center stage.  But what do you think?  Tell us, would you wear Gladiator Sandals?  Cast your vote on the sidebar!
