You Said: Yes to Cropped Pants

omiru-poll-result-cropped-pants_032909

skinny-cropped-jeans_032909We asked: Would you wear Cropped Pants?

You said:  Yes to Cropped Pants (barely), with a 53% to 47% vote.

Style tip? We hear you - cropped pants can be difficult to wear, especially if you’re not blessed with extra long legs.  That said, we love the breezy, laid-back style of these casual pants.  Here’s how to minimize the leg-shortening effect of Cropped Pants: (1) Wear ankle pants instead of styles that hit you at mid-calf, or (2) If you try a mid-calf style, opt for a skinnier leg fit to minimize the visual width of your legs.

Next question: It’s officially Spring, and we’re excited to wear a bunch of Spring brights, including the always-regal Purple.  But what do you think?  Would you wear Purple?  Cast your vote on the sidebar!

You Said: Yes to Pretty Florals

chiffon-flower-headband_032309We asked: Would you wear Pretty Florals?

You said:  Yes to Pretty Florals, with an 80% to 20% vote.

Style tip? Wearing Florals doesn’t have to mean a wildly patterned blouse or dress.  If you’re a fan of the trend, but you’re not so into floral prints, you can also try wearing flowers as accessories - as on a headband, a brooch, or even a belt.

Next question: We’re seeing Cropped Pants all over store windows - a sure sign that it’s Spring.  And while they’re a Spring staple, Cropped Pants can be difficult to wear, as they visually shorten your legs (and consequently, you).  Would you wear Cropped Pants?  Cast your vote on the sidebar!

You Said: Yes to Nude Colors

gestuz-ruffle-waist-skirt_031509We asked: Would you wear Nude Colors?

You said:  Yes to Nude Colors, with a 56% to 44% vote.

Style tip? While they look positively delicious on dark skin tones, Nude colors, like Pastel Colors, have a tendency to wash out fair skin tones.  If you’re fair skinned and still love the look, try wearing a nude colored skirt (instead of a blouse) to minimize the wash-out effect on your face.

Next question: Florals are replacing Feathers as the embellishment of choice this Spring.  But would you wear them?  Cast your vote on the sidebar!

Editor’s Note (3/17/09): Our apologies, dear readers, for conflating "nude" with vanilla colored skin.  You’re completely right - "nude" isn’t a single color and can be anything from dark espresso to a light vanilla cream.  The style advice above is for beige colored clothing, but it also applies to chocolate colored clothing on women with dark skin.  If you have dark skin but love wearing a mocha brown, it’s best worn as a skirt.  Pair it with a pretty pastel colored top (a robin’s egg blue, perhaps) for a sophisticated and color coordinated look.

You Said: No to Animal Prints

ruffle-scoop-neck-top_030909We asked: Would you wear Animal Prints?

You said:  No to Animal Prints, with a 54% to 46% vote.

Style tip? If you’re not quite ready to try leopard prints (or giraffe spots), you can still try a sophisticated zebra pattern.  The black and white zebra stripe pattern makes a statement without shouting as loud as leopard prints.

Next question: You’ve already said that Pastel Colors are perfectly Spring.  But what do you think of nude colors?  Tell us, would you wear Nude Colors?  Cast your vote on the sidebar!

You Said: Yes to Gingham

secret-wash-button-down-gingham_022509We asked: Would you wear Gingham?

You said:  Yes to Gingham, with a 58% to 42% vote.

Style tip? Gingham is such a fresh Spring look.  Pair it with garments that give off an equal insouciance: white trousers (for guys and girls), denim skirts, and bright colors.  We love a classic blue gingham, but you can also branch out and try the pattern in other colorways.

Next question: Animal prints are not just for our animal friends–zebra prints, in particular, are taking Spring by storm.  Tell us, would you wear Animal Prints?  Cast your vote on the sidebar!

You Said: Yes to Pastel Colors

short-sleeve-cotton-cardigan_022209We asked: Would you wear Pastel Colors?

You said:  Yes to Pastel Colors, with a 61% to 39% vote.

Style tip? The Pastel Colors you’re seeing in stores are a sign that Spring is on it’s way.  How to wear them?  If you’re dark skinned, pastels are a natural - they provide a beautiful contrast to your skin tone.  But for those of you who have fairer complexions, pastels can wash you out.  Two solutions for our fair skinned friends: (1) pair your pastels with a brighter color (like the pictured sweater over the light pastel shirt), or (2) wear your pastels with a tan (or bronzer).

P.S. Pastel colors aren’t just for women.  Guys, if you want to be adventurous, you can try a lilac (or salmon pink) shirt for work or for play.

Next question: Like Pastel Colors, Gingham Check fabric is a harbinger of Spring.  Tell us, would you wear Gingham?  Cast your vote on the sidebar!

Ladylike Glamour at DKNY, Luca Luca, and Monique Lhuillier.

Style tip?  Maybe it’s the effect of the depressed economy, maybe it’s the influence of elegant Michelle Obama–but restrained, ladylike fashion is fully in style.  So don your gloves, pull on a polished skirt suit, or slip into a sophisticated ball gown.

Gold at Lela Rose, Philip Lim, and Milly.

Style tip?  Be bold with gold.  Wear it head to toe (as at Lela Rose), or tone it down by pairing it with neutrals (as at Philip Lim) or other warm colors (like the orange-gold combo at Milly).

Fall 2009 Fashion Week Trend: Watercolor Prints

Watercolor Prints at United Bamboo, Jeremy Laing, and Lela Rose.

Style tip?  Now here’s a pretty sub-trend that feels more Spring than Fall.  Watercolor-like prints are a feminine twist on the broader Bold Prints trend.  Because they’re so dramatic, we recommend making them the focal point of your outfit.  They’re simply lovely on dresses, as seen at United Bamboo, Jeremy Laing, and Lela Rose.
