You Said: Yes to Conversational Prints

omiru-poll-result-conversational-prints_052310

minkpink-blooming-nice-tunic_052310We asked: Would you wear Conversational Prints?

You said:  Yes to Conversational Prints, with a 55% to 45% vote.

Style tip? Conversational Prints, the novelty print designs that are so named because they can start a conversation, have been around since the early 1900s.  They surged in popularity during the 40s and 50s, and they’re again part of the fashion conversation today.  How to wear conversational prints?  Wear them proudly - and as the centerpiece of your look.  Every great look has a distinct focus - a place where the eye focuses.  Make your conversational print the focus of your outfit - and choose complementary pieces (in color and silhouette) to make the print stand out.

Next question: Leggings and denim are two of the hallmark trends of the season - and they’ve combined to form "jeggings" or jean leggings.  But what do you think?  Tell us, would you wear jeggings?  Cast your vote on the sidebar!

You Said: No to Short Shorts

bdg-5-pocket-short-shorts_051610We asked: Would you wear Short Shorts?

You said:  No to Short Shorts, with a 65% to 35% vote.

Style tip? While shorts are a summer staple, short shorts tend to cause a bit more controversy than your garden variety short.  Proponents of the short short cite its ability to visually lengthen your leg, while opponents point out the difficulty in wearing short shorts if you have less-than-perfect legs.  We’d recommend a slim cut short short for younger women who are tall and slender.  If you’re more petite, however, you can still wear short shorts, extending the illusion of longer legs with a heeled shoe.  Summer’s wedge espadrilles look especially fresh with short shorts.

Next question: Conversational Prints, featuring motifs like plants, animals, and other ephemera, do just that - start a conversation.  But they can be too much, especially in large doses.  What do you think?  Tell us, would you wear conversational prints?  Cast your vote on the sidebar!

You Said: Yes to Pattern on Pattern

omiru-poll-result-pattern-on-pattern_050810

pattern-on-pattern_051010We asked: Would you wear Pattern on Pattern?

You said:  Yes to Pattern on Pattern, with a 64% to 36% vote.

Style tip? Wearing pattern on pattern may not be covered in Style 101, but it’s not as hard as you might imagine.  What are the rules for wearing two different patterns?  To effectively combine two different patterns, make sure that the two patterns "speak" to one another.  This may be through a shared color, motif, or even pattern size (e.g. pairing micropatterns with other micropatterns).  Case in point - the heart blouse and jacket pictured at left.  Notice how the shared heart motif - and the grey color - brings these two pieces together.

Next question: Summer is just around the corner, which means hot days - and a sea of shorts for weekend wear.  And one of the most popular styles this season is hotpants (aka short shorts).  But what do you think?  Tell us, would you wear short shorts?  Cast your vote on the sidebar!

You Said: No to Sweatpants and Heels

omiru-poll-result-sweatpants-heels_043010

luxe-terry-un-sweatpant_043010We asked: Would you wear Sweatpants and Heels?

You said:  An overwhelming No to Sweatpants and Heels, with a 91% to 9% vote.

Style tip? Sweatpants have gone from standard gym fare to high fashion over the last few seasons.  They started out as a high fashion statement, especially when paired with luxe items like stiletto heels and statement jackets, but now they’re becoming more accessible to the mainstream (at least, as accessible as they probably ever will be).  The vast majority of you pooh-poohed Sweatpants and Heels, but the look can work for those with the chutzpah to pull it off.  The idea is to dress up the sweatpants with more formal items - a wide belt, crisp jacket, blouse, and of course, the heels.  The sweatpants, in turn, playfully dress down the look.

Next question: Pairing pattern on pattern can be challenging, but it’s often worth the effort.  But what do you think?  Tell us, would you mix and match different patterns in a single outfit?  Cast your vote on the sidebar!

You Said: No to Clogs

omiru-poll-result-clogs_042510

seychelles-slip-on-clog_042510We asked: Would you wear Clogs?

You said:  No to Clogs, with a 67% to 33% vote.

Style tip? Clogs are one of those fashion trends, like harem pants, that are immediately dismissed as hard to wear.  But thanks to blessings from Chanel, Alexander Wang, and Alexa Chung, they’re making a comeback in a big way for S/S 2010.  How to wear these clunky heeled shoes?  Counterbalance the heavy weight of the shoe with something stunning up top - a statement jacket, necklace, or top.  The key is to wear clogs in a way that counteracts their prudish vibe.  Try a bohemian top - or a minidress - for a thoroughly modern take on the clog.

Next question: Sweatpants are traditionally athletic clothes, but they’re making their way out of the gym and onto the streets, paired with statement jackets and sky high stilettos.  These comfy pants are starting to go more mainstream, so says the Wall Street Journal.  But what do you think?  Tell us, would you wear sweatpants and heels around town?  Cast your vote on the sidebar!

You Said: No to Tie-Dye

omiru-poll-result-tie-dye_041810

dip-dyed-tank_041810We asked: Would you wear Tie-Dye?

You said:  No to Tie-Dye, with a 53% to 47% vote.

Style tip? Tie-Dye feels unabashedly 80s in vibe, but it’s coming back in a big way for S/S 2010.  You can go bold with the sunburst tie dye patterns, but you can rock this trend just as well with dip-dye patterns.  We’ve always been huge fans of ombre, so this dip dyeing is our tie-dye pattern of choice.  As for what to wear with tie-dye, you can’t go wrong with white bottoms and metallic sandals for a beachy vibe.  Or dress tie-dye up with a skinny blazer, jeans, and heels.

Next question: Clogs have traditionally read as hard-to-wear, clunky shoes to us.  But they’re making a comeback for S/S 2010 - and even some clog holdouts are getting converted to this trend.  But what do you think?  Tell us, would you wear clogs?  Cast your vote on the sidebar!

You Said: No to One-Piece Jumpers

omiru-poll-result-jumper_041110

pins-needles-piped-sailor-jumper_040410We asked: Would you wear One-Piece Jumpers?

You said:  No to One-Piece Jumpers, with a 77% to 23% vote.

Style tip? Jumpers - or rompers, as they’re also known - are not the most intuitive fashion choice for spring.  But what’s undeniable is how fast they’re flying off the racks.  Jumpers definitely feel like a (slightly more accessible) Spring 2010 version of the Harem Pant - or the Sweatpants/Stiletto trend - something that fashionistas love, but definitely not mainstream.  If you dare to wear a romper, try them with a pair of low heels.  Too high heels are a bit too much, especially for daytime, with the short shorts that inevitably accompany the romper.  Or, if you want to go for a higher heel, add a bit of edge to your feminine romper with a boyfriend blazer.

Next question: Tie Dye is reminiscent of (questionable) 80s style.  But Proenza Schouler’s Spring 2010 collection made us see psychedelic tie-dye in a whole new light.  But what do you think?  Tell us, would you wear tie-dye?  Cast your vote on the sidebar!
