Q&A: How to Wear Skinny Jeans if You’re Short

Q:  I have not yet caved into the skinny jeans trend.  I’m short, so my legs are not long, and I fear that hemming the [jeans] would cut off the taper.  Any suggestions?

BDG 5 Pocket Capri Skinny Jean Dark BlueA:  Skinny jeans can look good on short people.  However, the shorter you are, the leaner your legs must be to pull off the look successfully.

If you do decide to go with the skinny jeans, you do run the risk of cutting off the taper if you hem the pants.  Good instincts.  Should you hem the pants, we recommend taking them to a good tailor who can recreate the taper of the pants.

But the skinny jeans aren’t the only hot pants style out there.  We’re rather fond of Wide Trouser Jeans, as they’re as stylish as they are figure flattering.

Q&A: Why You Should Wear Flats to a Club

Q:  Can I wear flats to a club?

Nine West \'Ladyville\' SlingbackA:  Yes, you can wear flats at a club.  In fact, you’re even encouraged to do so, as flats are particularly stylish this season.

At the club, the perfect outfit is sexy–but not super scandalous.  You want to show off some skin, but not wear anything overly revealing.  Case in point: if you’re wearing a miniskirt, a top with a bit more coverage is in order to balance out the outfit.  Or if you’re wearing a low-cut top, try a more conservative skirt or pants.

Why might you want to wear flats at a club?  Wearing flats instead of heels can take an over-the-top outfit down a notch.  Plus, they’re *that* much more comfortable, meaning you can dance the night away–pain free.

Q&A: What to Wear With Navy Capri Pants

Q:  [I just got] a pair of navy capri pants that end just under the knees. They’re tapered, but not clingy, just sort of in between tight and baggy. The fabric’s slightly shiny, so I’m wondering what I could match with them.

Pintucks and Lace Tuxedo TankA:  Navy blue shorts play right into a continuing trend for Spring: Nautical Fashion.  But rather than literally translating the seafaring trend with horizontal stripes or rope detailing, try pairing the shorts with a white top with dressy detailing, such as this Pintucks and Lace Tuxedo Tank ($36.50) at J Crew (pictured) or this Love Squared Swiss Dot Babydoll Top ($26) at Nordstrom.  Added bonus?  The dressiness of the top will complement the slight shine on the shorts.

Another idea?  Try pairing the navy shorts with a yellow top for an unexpected splash of color.  You might want to check out the Susina Pointelle Apron Camisole ($38) at Nordstrom or the Scoop Neck Tunic in Bright Yellow ($17.80) at Forever 21.

Q&A: Where to Buy Khakis for Slim Men

Q:  I’d like to buy a nice pair of khakis.  I have a size 30 waist, and I’m slim and tall.  I’d like khakis that aren’t super tight–but I want them fitted, not loose or baggy in any way.  What and/or where would you recommend?

Club Monaco KhakisA:  For mall-type stores, Club Monaco is probably going to be your best bet.  They tend to cut their clothes slimmer than that of other stores.  Banana Republic also tends to fit slim men well.

Depending on the how snug you want the fit to be, you may want to look into designer brands as well.  Prada, in particular, is known to cut their garments extra slim–but they’re rather pricey.

Q&A: What to Wear to a Black Tie Beach Wedding

Q:  I’ve been invited to a wedding in September. The location is Cape Cod, and the dress code is Black Tie. But the venue is the beach. What the heck do you wear to a Black Tie Beach Wedding?

Laundry by Shelli Segal Strapless Satin Sheath DressA:  A black tie beach wedding?  What a challenge–but it’s not one we can’t handle.

Black tie attire for women translates into cocktail dresses, long dresses, or evening separates.  Considering the location of the wedding, though, we’d prefer a cocktail dress over a long dress, which could potentially read as too formal for the occasion.  The ideal dress for a black tie beach wedding would be formal in feel, yet unfussy and something you could easily move around in.

We suggest:

Laundry by Shelli Segal Strapless Satin Sheath | $295 at Nordstrom (Pictured).
We love the gorgeous travertine color, elegant shape, and the effortlessly chic bow.

Vena Cava Gotham Dress | $535 at blaec
Quirkily arty in a way that blends the casual and the formal.

Vena Cava Marie Dress | $365 (sale) at blaec
Not your everyday LBD.  Plus, the abalone buttons playfully echo the wedding location.

Norma Kamali Everlast Bubble Halter Dress | $340 at Nordstrom
For a dollop of drama, you could try this Norma Kamali dress with a plunging halter neckline.

What about shoes?  Look for a pair of dressy sandals–the open toe is key for walking through the sand.  Make sure to choose flats, as heels and sand don’t mix.  Feel free to bring along an extra pair of dressy shoes for the post-beach festivities!

Q&A: How to Wear a Shirtdress

Q:  I’m thinking of buying a shirtdress, since they seem to be more flattering than other styles out there.  But I’m not sure how versatile they are.  How do I put together an outfit with a shirtdress?

Greek Wool ShirtdressOmiru is pleased to bring you the answer to this style question from Christina Kornilakis and Sarah Gregory, the designers behind the vintage-inspired clothing line Sweet Tater.

A:  The fun about shirtdresses is that you can dress them up or dress them down.

For a sexy going out look, add a pair of tights and ankle boots and you’re ready to go.  And if you want a more casual laid back look, you can throw on a pair of jeans and some flat boots.

Sometimes simple is better.  You could just wear a shirtdress as is with some sexy heels.

Q&A: What Necklace to Wear with a Turtleneck Sweater

Theory \'Juliet\' Cashmere SweaterQ:  I just found a great bargain on a black cashmere turtleneck and love it.  But it seems a little plain to me - I’m just used to seeing my neckline and my favorite necklace sticking out.  I’ve been told by some girls I know that a turtleneck works well with something over it - but what?

A:  With high necked shirt styles, like turtlenecks, you want to counterbalance with a long necklace.  And the more substantial the turtleneck, the more visual weight the long necklace needs to hold.  A chunky turtleneck, for example, requires a heavier chain or larger, bolder stones.  A more lightweight turtleneck, however, can be paired with a more delicate necklace.

Junk Necklace by Erica AnenbergSince the turtleneck you’re accessorizing is a simple, elegant black, you may want to pair it with a necklace with more of an edge.  For an edgy elegant look, you may want to try a necklace like Erica Anenberg’s "Junk Necklace."  It features a 30" sterling silver chain and unusual found item charms  that should contrast nicely with the sophistication of the black turtleneck.

Q&A: How to Wear Shorts if You’re Short

Q:  When the weather gets warmer, I want to wear shorts.  But I’m petite (5′2"), and I can’t seem to find a pair that doesn’t make me look short.

Vince Stone Washed Twill Knee Crop ShortsA:  You can wear shorts–but it’s all about proportion.  Short shorts, while they visually elongate the legs, are generally unflattering unless you’re blessed with a model’s figure.  And below-the-knee styles cut your legs in a way that visually chops off a few inches of height.

Make the most of what you’ve got by choosing a pair of shorts that hits at about the knee level.  Everyone has an optimal shorts (and skirt) length.  Find yours by standing in front of a mirror and rolling up the short legs little by little until you find the length that makes your legs look the longest and leanest.

Our final tip?  Look for shorts with a lean leg in order to optimize your visual height.

Q&A: How to Wear Trapeze Tops in Your 30s

Q:  I love trapeze tops, but think I am too old. How can women in their late thirties (39) modify [this] trend?

Velvet Torch Empire DressA:  If you love trapeze tops, you should wear them!  Just be mindful of what
you wear them with, and look for styles with an appropriate amount of coverage.  Some rules of thumb?  Look for sleeved styles, and avoid overly exaggerated shapes.

Pictured is a trapeze shaped "dress" that would work
nicely over jeans or pants: Velvet Torch Scoop Neck Empire Dress ($52 at Nordstrom.
It has a flattering neckline and an easy to wear shape, and at that price,
it’s a deal.  If you’re feeling more adventurous, you might want to try
this colorful Nanette Lepore Print Shift Dress ($275 at Nordstrom)…again, over a pair of pants.

Another Omiru reader, Robyn, offered up another idea for sleeveless trapeze tops.  Robyn suggests layering a sleeveless trapeze top over a long sleeved shirt or turtleneck.  Not only will the layered tops keep you warm this Winter, but it also makes the trapeze top look more age appropriate.
