Spring 2010 Fashion Week Trend: Extra Long Blazers

Extra Long Blazers at Erin Fetherston, Diane von Furstenberg, and Yigal Azrouel.

Style tip?  The hip-length blazer is the menswear blazer standard - but Spring 2010 is seeing extra long blazers that extend past the hip.  Wear the extra long blazer open, paired with a close-fitting base layer, as seen at Diane von Furstenberg and Yigal Azrouel.  Or wear it closed, as seen at Erin Fetherston, tied with an elegant, feminine bow.

Spring 2010 Fashion Week Trend: Microstripes

Microstripes at Cynthia Steffe, Lela Rose, and Tuleh.

Style tip?  Horizontal stripes are nothing new, but this season’s twist takes these linear patterns and shrinks them.  Microstripes are populating the runway, mesmerizing us with their optical qualities.  Try microstripes paired with solids or other patterns - while the metallic jacket and shorts are a fun foil for the microstriped bandeau top, the elegantly patterned jacket at Lela Rose adds a new level of sophistication to the simple stripe.  Or you can do as Tuleh does and contrast the microstripe against smooth, bare skin.

Spring 2010 Fashion Week Trend: Elegant Bows

Elegant Bows at Erin Fetherston, Carolina Herrera, and Lela Rose.

Style tip?  Bows aren’t just for little girls - they’re all grown up (and quite elegantly crafted) on the Spring 2010 runways.  Use a bow to cinch your waistline, as at Erin Fetherston.  Do as Carolina Herrera does and draw attention towards your face with a bow that recalls the silhouette of a necklace.  Or build a bow into the architecture of a blouse or skirt, as Lela Rose does.

Spring 2010 Fashion Week Trend: Statement Necklaces

Statement Necklaces at LAMB, Reem Acra, and Ports 1961.

Style tip?  How to wear a statement necklace?  The easiest way is to pair it against a basic background - a top or dress in a simple shape and solid color.  But if you want to try something a little more challenging, the runway provides some fun inspiration.  Try layering a bunch of normal sized necklaces in similar shapes, as seen at LAMB.  Or go bold and try not one but Two statement necklaces as Reem Acra did - note that even though they’re different in silhouette, they still relate to each other with the beading.  Or pair pattern and your statement necklace - but keep the shape of your silhouette simple - like the look at Ports 1961.

Spring 2010 Fashion Week Trend: Not So Boring Beige

Beige at Tuleh, Luca Luca, and Erin Fetherston.

Style tip?  Beige doesn’t have to be boring.  You can get a chic monochromatic look by mixing different shades of beige, as seen at Luca Luca and Erin Fetherston.  Finish off your beige look with a shoe in a nice pastel shade - or gold.

Spring 2010 Fashion Week Trend: Sequined Disco Dresses

Sequined Disco Dresses at Cynthia Steffe, Reem Acra, and Derek Lam.

Style tip?  The disco 70s and the over-the-top 80s shone a spotlight on sequins and shine - so in today’s backwards looking fashion culture, it’s no surprise to see a resurgence of this glittery embellishment.  Our favorite look places these sequins all over a cocktail-length dress in a simple silhouette.  With these sequined disco dresses, keep your other accessories minimal - a snappy pair of heels and a clutch will do the trick.

Spring 2010 Fashion Week Trend: The Sharp Shoulder

The Sharp Shoulder at Vena Cava, Preen, and Erin Fetherston.

Style tip?  Whether you’re breaking out the shoulderpads, wearing a sharp shouldered blazer, or trying out pouf sleeves, you’re working one of Spring 2010’s most important silhouette trends.  We love the sharp shoulder paired with more unstructured pieces - as seen with the hard-meets-soft silhouette at Preen.  If you want to draw extra attention towards your sharp shoulders, layer on a statement necklace.

Spring 2010 Fashion Week Trend: Animal Prints

Animal Prints at LAMB, Diane von Furstenberg, and Monique Lhuillier.

Style tip?  Unleash your inner animal with gorgeous leopard, zebra, and reptile prints.  Wear a single print - as at LAMB and Monique Lhuillier - or mix things up with multiple animal prints (as seen at Diane von Furstenberg).  Not so sure about animal prints?  Try a leopard or zebra print scarf, paired with a slouchy tee and slim leg pants.

Spring 2010 Fashion Week Trend: Vests 2.0

Vests 2.0 at Charlotte Ronson, Cynthia Steffe, and Ports 1961.

Style tip?  Vests are a wonderful layering item for Spring (and Fall, for that matter, where they fit neatly under jackets and overcoats).  And we’re loving the blossoming variety of Vest styles that we’re seeing this season.  Charlotte Ronson’s vest is the closest to the standard tailored variety we’ve been seeing for the last few seasons - but this one feels more like a sleeveless jacket.  Cynthia Steffe’s vest feels more utility - like a woman’s version of a fisherman’s vest, paired with pretty florals instead of trouser pants.  And Ports 1961’s vest goes bold with metallic embellishments and a full-length silhouette.  So go on, have some fun with Vests - and don’t be afraid to contrast styles - masculine with feminine, soft with hard, and shine with matte.

Spring 2010 Fashion Week Trend: Vibrant Yellow

Vibrant Yellow at Cynthia Steffe, Preen, and Monique Lhuillier.

Style tip?  What we love about vibrant yellow is that it’s upbeat, yet somehow relaxed (think "mellow yellow").  It looks great on tanned and darker skin tones.  For Asian women, try a bright shade of yellow (like the sunny shade seen at Preen).  What color shoes to pair with yellow?  You can’t go wrong with grey.
