How to Wear a Miniskirt
June 25th, 2009
What’s the key to wearing a miniskirt with style? As you show off your legs, keep your top half covered up so that you’re not showing off too much skin. This holds true whether you’re a teenager or if your teen years are far behind you. The rule of thumb is that the shorter your skirt, the more you want to keep covered up on top. Here’s Omiru’s version of how to wear a miniskirt:
1. Start with a miniskirt. Structured fabrics are going to be your best bet so the skirt isn’t overly figure-hugging.
2. Layer on a tank top and a tailored button-down shirt. Notice how the button-down and tank work together with the two shades of blue. We love how the bright blue knit tank will peek out from under the lighter, paler tailored woven shirt.
3. Finish off the outfit with a light silk scarf (don’t you love how the brown looks against the backdrop of the blues) and a pair of statement sandals.

Will this work for a 40-something with great legs? I don’t mind wearing skirts just above the knees for everyday wear, but mid-thigh length gets a little dicey. The same question applies for short-shorts. Still, in hot weather, it’s hard to beat the shorter lengths for comfort.

I definitely think you can wear a mini skirt or short shorts when you’re 40 and in great shape. covering up on top and coordinating your clothes with age appropriate colors will make the outfit seem less pamela anderson.

My denim mini gets TONS of use, and I agree that the key is to keep it fairly conservative up top.
Also agree that a 40-year-old with great legs can pull it off, if paired with less racy tops and shoes.

I’m short but for day I don’t want to wear heels with my mini skirt. So I wear a flesh-tone pair of ballet flats instead. They make my legs appear longer and I don’t feel as naked as I would in sandals.
I do like how you mixed the blues. I’m a big fan of sticking to one color in different shades.

hmm would you knot the shirt over the tank top so instead of revealing skin you reveal the blue tank? or would you just wear it hanging open?

my american apparel minis i’ve pretty much worn to shreds. unfortunately they lose shape rather quickly, but they are my absolutely favorite summer wardrobe staple – have 3 of them in the blue!
