Mens Spring Summer Fashion Formula #7: Sophisticated in Shorts
May 20th, 2009
When it gets warm outside, you don’t have to forego style for comfort. Sure, a pair of shorts doesn’t usually scream style - but worn right, it can provide the foundation for a polished warm weather look. Here’s how to pull off laid-back sophisticated in shorts:
1. Start with a crisp button-down shirt and a pair of knee length shorts. We love the clean look of the white and navy.
2. Layer on a shawl collar cardigan, left unbuttoned.
3. Slip on a pair of leather flip flops. A canvas bag will complete the laid-back look.

Nice concept, but if it’s warm enough for shorts, most people are not going to wear a long-sleeve shirt and sweater!

True, but it can work for areas in which layering is a must. And I’ve personally pulled off the women’s version of this outfit – though when it got hot in the afternoon, I took off the sweater

I wore an outfit similar to this to class a couple if days ago. The only difference being I wore a pull-over shawl collar sweater instead of a cardigan along with Sperry Top-Siders replacing the flip-flops. I’m a big fan of this look.

I like this look but I agree that pairing a sweater with shorts seems wrong, not only for the temperature factor but also for how they look together. In my book, heavy top with light bottom does not go together. I’d substitute the shorts with lightweight khakis/chinos.

Let’s agree to disagree on this point Sweater + shorts isn’t exactly conventional, but there are times when it can work. Though, if the capsule wardrobe were more diverse, I do agree that I would have chosen a lighter weight sweater…

I don’t ‘do’ shorts, so I would automatically wear similar jeans instead.
