Spring Summer Fashion Formula #1: How to Wear Bright Colors at the Office
March 26th, 2009
Mark the beginning of Spring at the office with a bold, bright blouse. You can keep your brights office friendly, even in conservative work environments, by pairing them with quiet, neutralizing colors. Here’s how to wear bright colors without having your clothes speak too loud:
1. Start with a basic trouser pant, and add a boldly colored blouse for contrast.
2. Cover up bare arms with a lightweight cardigan in a neutral color. Light grey is the perfect accompaniment to the springy green.
3. Button up with a fitted trench; it’ll keep your look perfectly tailored for the office.
4. Finish off the look with a pair of medium heels (to keep your legs looking long and lean in those trouser pants) and a basic work bag slung over your shoulder.

I’m wearing a variation of this outfit at work right now: cobalt blue short-sleeve blouse with a ruffled collar trim, open dark grey cardigan, black wide leg trousers, flat black boots (don’t really do heels all that often given all the walking I do), and a big black tote. I guess this outfit works because my co-worker told me I look nice today!

I’m not generally afraid of doing multiple brights at once, even at work … but I love the subdued, classic cool of this ensemble.

I love those shoes.

I am currently struggling with this one. I like to have a pop of color in my otherwise neutral wardrobe and talked myself into a lemon yellow pair of flats.

Any suggestions for making it work at the office?

Kathleen – the outfit sounds lovely, and I love the coincidence that you’d be wearing a variation on the outfit we posted about!
Laura – you can make your lemon pair of Franco Sarto flats work at the office. Try pairing them with a navy blue pair of trouser pants, so that they just peek out from under the pant legs.
