Q&A: What to Wear With Polka Dots
July 26th, 2007
Q: I have a navy polka dotted skirt with a semi-high waist and would like to know what types of shirts or blouses I can match with it. I would prefer something easy and simple.
A: With a geometric print like the polka dotted skirt, you’re going to want to pair it with a solid color. A white, flirty blouse will give you a French-inspired look. Look for blouses with ruffles or other special detailing. But you also might want to try a brightly colored sweater. Yellow, in particular, goes well with navy blue. Even though it’s pricey, I love the look of this cashmere sweater in Bright Poppy at J Crew (pictured).

I usually hate j crew, but that sweater is to die for!

I’m not thrilled with the idea of pairing it will yellow. Maybe it’s just me, though, because I have a hard time wearing yellow with my fair skin.
I actually have a similar skirt and I pair it with a solid, cool-red blouse most of the time for a very romantic look. Girly white blouses work very well, too, to make a fun daytime outfit. I love white blouses with small puffed sleeves and some ruffles. I agree with you that details like that make this sort of outfit work. Otherwise the solid color top would look too plain.
With a white blouse I’d recommend adding some more color in the accessories. I’ve found that some turquoise works surprisingly well for me to add some pop without being over-powering.

Turquoise–I love that. Thanks for the tips, Meg!

I like the idea of a cute white shirt with details, but do you have any ideas as to where I could get one without spending a bunch? I’m in college and don’t have much in the way of a fashion budget, so something in the $25 and below category would be great. And long sleeve would be fab too, especially for the fall.

Hi Lana,
Forever 21, Target, and H&M would be my recommendations in the $25 and below category.
