Q&A: How to Prevent Shirt Gapping
June 29th, 2007
Q: I am a chubby short waisted woman, and most blouses or shirts are way too long waisted for me which causes them to gap at the front. Can you help me?
A: If your shirts are gapping at the front, buy shirts from retailers whose fit features a wider waistline (this advice also holds true for those with no waist, like myself). I’ve had good results at Banana Republic and Gap for shirts. If you fall in love with a particular shirt, though, you can buy a larger sized shirt and have it tailored down to your shape.

DOUBLE STICK TAPE!! I’m relatively petite and when I find a button down that fits my shoulders and waist, it ALWAYS gaps in the front. I use double stick tape for the gap and it holds pretty much all day, though I wouldn’t recommend doing any heavy stretching while wearing the shirt.
I also save those tiny safety pins that come with a lot of shirts that hold the pouch with extra buttons and sometimes I use the safety pin to pin the gap shut. Most shirts are folded over where the button hole is and you can safety pin it to the first layer and never have the pin show. I hope this helps!

Awesome tips about the double-stick tape and the tiny safety pins, Soomin! I’ll have to go buy some tiny safety pins

Excellent tips! I’m a short/no-waisted woman myself and I could definitely benefit from this!
I’ve been lucky with Banana Republic and Gap myself. Old Navy is a hit-or-miss if you want a less expensive alternative! If you live in Canada, I find that Smart Set is also another hit-or-miss fit!

I use to shop at Robinson-May in there juinor department and they had your shirts there. Long sleeve, 95% cotton 5% spandex, its stamped Q&A on the back of the shirt. Now the store is no more, I cant find your shirts. I love them and was wondering if someone could e-mail me back and let me know where to buy them. Thank you so much Karrie Marks.
