How can women in their late thirties(39) modify some of those trends. I love trapeze tops, but think I am too old. The little white dress would work. I would love some simple dresses at Forever 21 prices, but Theory seems to work better for me these days. Any suggestions?

I was looking at the last one thinking boy does that look familiar… no kidding… I almost bought it the other day from Forever21.

    Hi Pamela,

If you love trapeze tops, you should wear them!  Just be mindful of what you wear them with.  Here’s a trapeze shaped "dress" that would work nicely over jeans: Velvet Torch Scoop Neck Empire Dress.  It has a flattering neckline and an easy to wear shape, and at $52, it’s a deal.  If you’re feeling more adventurous, you might want to try this colorful Nanette Lepore Print Shift Dress…again, over a pair of pants.

And for the record, I’ve seen women of all ages shopping at Forever 21 :).  Sure, the vast majority of the items are meant for a teenage/twentysomething crowd, but there are respectable looking finds there for women of all ages…if you have the time to look.  You might also try H&M and Zara, and even Target, for cheap chic finds.  All tend to be fashion forward and relatively inexpensive.  Great for trendy items that you only want to wear for a season or two.  Oh, and Target tends to be more forgiving of less-than-perfect figures.

    Hope that helps!

I just bought a trapeze top at Old Navy. (At least I think it “counts” as “trapeze”… I can’t find it on the website now…)
Anyway, since it is sleeveless I was planning on wearing it over a long-sleeved t-shirt (or maybe black turtleneck?) until the weather warms up. I think this might feel more age appropriate for 30-somethings also.

Excellent idea, Robyn. Layering the sleeveless trapeze top over a long sleeved top does help make it more age-appropriate.
