How to Wear Your Summer Dresses This Fall

You don’t have to put away your summer dresses when the temperatures start to drop. The beauty of fall layering is that your summer clothes can be just as wearable as they were when temperatures were soaring. The key is just to pair them with different clothes. For summer, you would pair your minidress with strappy sandals and sunscreen. But for fall, you can pair the same dress with textured tights, ankle booties, and an oversized jacket. Here’s how to get the summer dress look this fall:
1. Start with the foundation of a warm weather minidress.
2. Keep your legs covered up with textured tights and ankle boots.
3. Layer on an oversized jacket, which contrasts with the slim fit of the minidress.
4. Finish off the look with a lightweight scarf (note how the small plaid echoes the larger buffalo check plaid pattern on the dress) and a handheld tote.

Oooh, this is great. I also love turning summer dresses into jumpers in the fall and winter. Almost any dress looks great layered over another shirt, and it allows for more versatility and, of course, warmth!!

I bought some nice summer dresses this year and would love to wear them into fall. Problem is, they are mostly silk dresses. One of my favourites is a blue and white silk sheath dress in an vivid, ikat resembling pattern.
The dress above seams easy to wear into fall as the colors are not so vivid and the fabric doesn’t seem to be that lightweight. But how about the more flirty patterns. Chiffon dresses etc?
So I’d love to have some information about the no-gos (fabric, pattern, style etc.) when wearing summer clothing into fall.
And although I cannot buy anything you show here (living in Europe), I return quite often for inspiration. Your site is great. I love it & hope you keep it going.

So true! There are a million ways to keep summer dresses going – through fall, and even year-round.

Great post. I´m already making lists of what can survive the summer and go into fall. I agree with the worry of the 2nd comment. I also wonder which are the no-gos. I think I have some: my pair of sunny yellow jeans are quite difficult to look fall-ish, even combining it with a load of dark grey in the rest of the outfit. For me mostly it´s the combination of colour and fabric that makes me feel a garment can´t make it into f&w. Sunny colours and light fabrics seem to me almost “unwearable” until summer again. Coral red; combinations of bright blues…

Certain summer dresses can work into fall. It depends on the color, fabric and pattern. I don’t think a dress that is covered with a tropical flower print works too well – it just screams summer too much. Also, some colors just don’t jive with fall for me either – such as pale pink. But, I have a blue and black sleeveless jersey dress that works well into fall and even winter. For fall, I slip a tissue-weight long sleeved tee under it, then pair it with black leggings and either black booties or a dark low-heeled shoe or flats. For winter, I can add a long-sleeved jacket and switch to black boots instead of shoes. And maybe top it all off with a long scarf and beret.

I enjoyed reading all the comments. I am having a great time buying Summer dresses at great reduced prices to wear right into Fall. I will wear my men’s jackets and my suit jackets over my sleeveless dresses with leggings, tights, sweaters and boots, yippee!
Also, I will carry most of them on my Fall Cruise to Belize!
