Wear to Work: A Fresh Take on the Classic Sweater over Collared Shirt Combination
April 28th, 2009
Wearing a cardigan over a collared, button-down shirt at work is nothing groundbreaking, but you can easily give the look a fresh feel. Just mix and match patterns - and get creative with proportion. Here’s how to get a fresh take on the classic cardigan over button-down shirt look for work:
1. Start with a fitted striped collared, button-down shirt and a pair of well-cut trousers.
2. Add a brightly colored sweater over the striped shirt. Note how the yellow, organic pattern of the sweater contrasts with the blue and white linear pattern on the shirt. Plus, the half sleeves on the sweater allow the striped shirt to peek out from underneath.
3. Accessorize with a pair of feminine pumps and a slouchy bag. And to give the look a more youthful feel, regardless of your age, you can try tossing on a knit cap.

Would you let the shirttails peek out from the sweater too (not tuck them)?

Yes, for this outfit, I would let the shirttails peek out from under the sweater, so long as the shirttails were not too long.
