How to Wear Fishnet Stockings without Looking Trashy
February 26th, 2008
Feeling the love for this outfit? Here’s more information about it.
Editor’s Note: We were inspired by the equal 50-50 split on last week’s fishnet stockings poll, so we’re taking this opportunity to show the 50% of you who were pro-fishnets how to best wear this trend. And perhaps these tips will turn around some of the fishnet naysayers.
Fishnet stockings used to be reserved for a hot night out at the club or a late night rendezvous (or other equally racy events). But now they’re making their way into more mainstream wardrobes. How do you wear fishnets without looking trashy? Three simple tips:
(1) Choose a fishnet stocking with a fine mesh. The finer the mesh, the less racy the stockings appear.
(2) Pair the stockings with clothing that’s more sophisticated than sexy. If you’re wearing a dress or skirt, a hem that’s around knee-length or longer is ideal. Pants pair well with fishnet stockings–it’s especially fetching when you can see just a hint of stocking showing.
(3) Slip on a pair of closed-toe shoes. Boots are great, but most closed-toe shoes will do the trick. An open-toe shoe looks silly with fishnet stockings–or really any stockings (if it’s warm enough to wear an open-toe shoe, why are you wearing stockings?).

haha, I wear fishnets to church with a conservative skirt or dress with close toed heels. I wonder if my congregation is split 50/50 on whether I’m trashy or not 😉

Haha you’re daring! But then again, it’s not just about what you wear–how you wear your clothes and how you carry yourself matters even more.

I think they work if the outfit is relatively conservative. The smaller mesh is important– have you ever seen little “pops” of fat coming through the net? Not attractive!
I never thought of wearing them with pants– I wonder if they make fishnet “socks”?

at age 66 I still show my legs and enjoy eyecatching stockings, including fishnets. For those of us with a bit of road maps on our legs, as do I, my suggestion is to first put on a sheer pair of panty hose and then slip into the fishnets. Trust me, this works!

nude or almost nude colored fishnets make for a subtle yet interesting touch to an outfit.

Great tips, all! I love the nude fishnets for a touch of texture.

I used to wear fishnet stockings to work all the time. I had a lot of boring black suits and I would jazz things up with a pair of fishnets with a small diamond patterned mesh and my favorite mary janes. I worked at a bank at the time and they were very strict about clothing but they never let out a peep about the stockings. I think it might have helped that I’m really short and there wasn’t a lot of leg going on, lol.

I wear fishnets to work a lot in the fall and winter usually black or beige either with a knee-length skirt and heels or a below-the-knee skirt and boots showing an inch or so of my fishnets. I work with a lot of men and they do get noticed a lot LOL. Work can be boring at times and it’s nice to feel and look a little sexy.

I have a pair of fishnet knee-hi. Can’t remember where I got them and would like some more. I’ve loved fishnets ever since the song came out by Morris Day (am I dating myself). Anyway, a co-worker told me you can’t wear nets in the summer, but personally I’m won’t when its freezing outside. Is she right?

I totally think the best way to wear fishnets is with a skirt…during fall
