Spring 2008 Fashion Trends: Omiru Picks the Top 5 Least Wearable Trends

Maxi Dresses
Unless you’re six feet tall, maxi dresses look as if they swallowed you alive.

Mini Dresses
Great to wear…if you’re blessed with flawless (and long) legs.

The Bubble Skirt
A visually interesting but awkward-to-wear silhouette.  Fun for stylists, less fun for you.

Sheer Fabric
Done tastefully, sheer fabric can be gorgeous.  But it’s
tough to pull off during the day–and the transparent nature of the
fabric often shows a little more than you’re intending.

Feathers
Absolutely fabulous on accessories, tough to wear on clothes.

Wow– thanks for a great wrap-up on all the trends for Spring. I’d love to have a party to wear the Oscar de al Renta feather dress to!. I think the mini and maxi skirt look a bit tired and almost dated. Although I suppose minis in spring-summer are always going to be in. I’m surprised at the Vera Wang– hers look dull and dreary next to the beautiful colors.
    I’m ready to shop!

i agree! bubble skirts often make people look like they’re wearing “full” diapers! i guess if they are longer they are not as bad… and i hate that even a lot of t-shirts nowadays are so sheer.

I agree with your review. UUGH!

Yeah, I totally agree, Mimi. It’s tough to find an occasion to wear such an over-the-top elegant dress. But then again, it’s also tough to afford the dress, period. Alas.

Haha you really could fit a diaper under a bubble skirt! I don’t mind a slight bubble shape–but when it’s exaggerated, it’s extremely tough to wear. Even for models.

Yeah, I’m not a big fan of bubble skirts, either.

The only feathers I wear are on a couple of tea hats that I have.

I’d only wear sheer fabric over another layer that has plenty of coverage.

I’m definitely not blessed with the thighs to wear mini dresses. Plus, I have enough trouble keeping somewhat longer skirts down in the wind.

Ahhh, the maxi dress… I’m 5’10, rather slender, and in my mid-20s and I can’t pull them off to save my life. They make me look old, prudish, and big.

I agree with you about maxi dresses, but not with the mini dresses comment. Many people can pull this look off, and it is a staple to short girls like myself!

True–mini dresses can be great for short women. But they require a pair of great legs…which is not something all of us are lucky enough to have. As with everything on this Least Wearable list, mini dresses can be done right, with the right body type.

Dresses with pockets? Really? I remember the Jennifer Hudson dress with pockets worn at the Oscars that looked terrible AND got smashed by everyone who saw it.

  • 9. Trisha  |  September 17th, 2007 at 10:10 am

Yeah, we oh-so-vividly remember that too. But I don’t think it was the pockets that killed the dress 😉

Love this! I’ve got 3 or 4 dresses now with pockets and I love them to death. And agreed on all of the difficulty trends, *especially* bubble skirts which I can’t quite figure out why they’re still around.

Thanks, Ambika! We heart dresses with pockets too :) So convenient and so chic!

Minis, minis, minis! Guys love ’em. Women love to be seen in ’em. Don’t have the legs…wear pants.
