Q&A: How to Wear Skinny Jeans if You’re Short

April 5th, 2007

Q:  I have not yet caved into the skinny jeans trend.  I’m short, so my legs are not long, and I fear that hemming the [jeans] would cut off the taper.  Any suggestions?

BDG 5 Pocket Capri Skinny Jean Dark BlueA:  Skinny jeans can look good on short people.  However, the shorter you are, the leaner your legs must be to pull off the look successfully.

If you do decide to go with the skinny jeans, you do run the risk of cutting off the taper if you hem the pants.  Good instincts.  Should you hem the pants, we recommend taking them to a good tailor who can recreate the taper of the pants.

But the skinny jeans aren’t the only hot pants style out there.  We’re rather fond of Wide Trouser Jeans, as they’re as stylish as they are figure flattering.

I’m also around 5″ and I just got my first pair of skinny jeans. The shop owner taught me a tip: fold them up inside to the length that you want so that you won’t cut off the taper. If you wear heels, you can then adjust the length accordingly too.

I was excited to see this post as a “short” (5’4″) person who recently bought skinny jeans that I had previously forgone thinking there was no way I could wear them because I’m too short. I got them after purchasing some new wedge boots when I realized there was no other pant that would enable me to tuck the pants into the boots. And I was surprised how well they fit and looked. I wish I hadn’t been turned off them before.

I have to say, I wasn’t very impressed by your post however. You basically discourage short people from wearing them and the picture you show is exactly how shorter people shouldn’t wear them. Don’t cut them above the ankle and wear them with flip flops or flat shoes.

I think if your short, your best bet is to wear them tucked in to boots with a heel, wedge, or platform or leave them long and maybe even slightly wrinkled at the bottom with a heel or pump. I got mine at Forever21 ($12.50) and didn’t need to cut them. If you get skinny skinny jeans and do need to shorten them, you’re not really going to lose that much of the taper.

I certainly don’t recomend wide legs for a very shot person. They will overwhelm you and look…well wide! Skinny jeans that are ankle length will fit you perfectly. Just go to Wet sal and buy the ones marled “ankle” .

The picture there is EXACTLY how a short person should wear skinny jeans. Keep them on the short side. If your skinny jeans are longer and bunch up, thats ok, but wear a heel. Boots go great with either short or long skinnies, of course.
Skinny jeans are much better for the short woman then bootcut jeans. Also, make sure that the waist isn’t low. That makes legs look short. Keep the waist of the jeansjust over an inch below your belly button. Not lower. And the waist should be a bit higher in the back. Tuck in your tops! That makes your lower half very long. Avoid wide legs! And don’t worry so much about how skinny your legs are. Its not true that your legs have to be skinny to wear skinny jeans.

You don’t have to have skinny legs to wear skinny jeans? are you kidding?
If you have even kind of fat legs and you wear skinny jeans, I will point at you and chuckle to myself. It looks terrible.

I think it helps if you wear skinny jeans with heels. I never wear my skinny jeans with ballet flats, that just seems to take away height too.

I’m pretty short and always wear heels with my skinny jeans, helps give the illusion that my legs are longer.

Almost anyone can wear skinny jeans; it doesn’t matter your height, although it does matter with weight. Short people shouldn’t wear jeans as shown in the above picture, many breaks in fabric or pattern will make a person look shorter and wider.

For example, skinny jeans (that go all the way down where they’re meant to) and a long tee with make you look taller than the above skinny jeans, a short tee, a belt, bracelets, long necklaces, and flats. The basic rule is: Longer and less accessorized in the general waist to hips area (thus the bracelets as your arm is next to your body, and the long necklaces as they fall to your waist).

Another point to consider is that the jeans they have pictured aren’t fitting like a skinny. They fit more like a bootcut because skinny jeans are not made to be capri pants.

I am around 5’1” and I wear skinny jeans almost every day; they are most comfortable to me. They do bunch up at the ankles, but it’s not awkward looking in the least. I’m petite and wear a size 0 or 1 and the only complaint I have is that the skinny fit draws attention to my not-so-curvy butt. However, that can be solved with studded pockets, or details on the back pockets that curve inward to create an illusion.

I finally caved in today and decided to try on a pair of skinny jeans. I wanted to get boots but the style I liked only works if I tuck my jeans in. I have to say I was very suprised that they looked so good. I’m 5″ and average build and they actually made my legs looked thinner. Though I don’t agree that you don’t need skinny legs to wear skinny jeans. It doesn’t matter if you’re thighs or hips are bigger but it helps if you’re actual legs are thin or at least smaller. I even tried them on with ballet flats and they looked pretty good.

I recently bought a pair of ANA skinny jeans in the petite section of JCPenneys. Iam 5 ft. 1, and these jeans are perfect for my height. I choose the dark wash, but they are avaliable in several different colors. I love how they look and I feel like Ive found a jean that fits me. I was never one to try on a petite jean because they just looked like they would be too short, but when I walked out of the dressing room, not only was the length great, but another shopper seen me in them and ended up buying a pair for herself. These skinny jeans are great!

I’m 5’5″ and bought skinny jeans because they tuck well into winter boots. I don’t know if I qualify as short? I’m quite slender with regular leg length. However, I think tall or short people can look good wearing skinny jeans with boots.

@Karolyn – Wear them on the long side; cropped pants don’t work well for those of us that are short :)
